May 5 – World Hand Hygiene Day

  • World Hand Hygiene Day 5 May 2019 marks the 11th year of the WHO SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign. 2019 Theme – “why infection prevention and hand hygiene are important for quality care”.

National Affairs:

India, UK in talks to build Naval super carrier under ‘Make in India’

  • The United Kingdom is in talks with the Indian government on building a new state-of-the-art aircraft carrier along the lines of Britain’s HMS Queen Elizabeth as part of the ongoing ‘Make in India’ project .

Maharashtra:

Mumbai likely to be first to try out ‘One Nation One Card’ system

  • Mumbai may well become the first city where the government will implement its ambitious One Nation One Card policy, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating the Ahmedabad Metro in March.

Telangana:

New record in property tax collection

  • In a record-breaking feat, a dozen Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across Telangana collected 100% property tax of the demand raised in the financial year 2018-19 while another 25 of them collected up to 98%.

Kerala:

Transgender student performs at a varsity inter-zone fest in Kerala

  • In a first in the State, a transgender student competed in a dance contest in a university interzone arts festival. Riya also demanded reservation for trans students in NCC. A graduate in fashion designing and a fashion designer by profession, Riya is now pursuing her second graduation.

Science Inversions:

Robot from IIT Madras checks pipelines for leakage

  • Researchers from IIT Madras have developed a robot to check pipelines for leaks and other faults. Named Endobot, this robot is to be marketed by an IIT Madras incubated startup, Solinas Integrity, founded by the researchers.

International Affairs:

GLAAD Media Awards 2019:

  • Madonna, a pioneer for gay rights, accepted the Advocate for Change Award and Monáe took home outstanding music artist at the 2019 GLAAD Media Awards.

Pakistan appoints ex-IMF official as new SBP governor

  • Baqir, a Pakistani economist working for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been appointed as the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

Sports Affairs:

Asian Squash championship:

  • Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa emerged champions in the Asian squash championship. This is the first time two Indians have finished on top in the same tournament.

Feliks Stamm International Boxing

  • Gaurav Solanki and Manish Kaushik bagged a gold each as Indian boxers finished with six medals at the 36th Feliks Stamm International boxing tournament in Warsaw, Poland. Besides the two golds, Indians clinched a silver and three bronze to wrap off their campaign on a high.

Riyan Parag becomes youngest player to score half-century in IPL

  • Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag has become the youngest player to score an IPL half-century. The 17-year-old from Assam achieved this feat against Delhi Capitals in a match in New Delhi.
