CCI approves acquisition of Varian Medical Systems, Inc by SHS GmbH:

Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves acquisition of Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (Varian) by Siemens Healthineers Holding I Gmb (SHS GmbH) under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002.

  • The proposed combination relates to the acquisition of 100% of shares of common stock and sole control of Varian, by SHS GmbH.
  • SHS GmbH, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens Healthineers AG (Siemens Healthineers) which is ultimately part of the Siemens AG Group.
  • Varian is a global provider of medical devices and software solutions for treating cancer with radiation therapy.

MoU signed between Indian Navy and IIT Delhi:

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to furthering the relationship between Indian Navy and IIT Delhi on research in underwater domain of Naval Electronic Systems.

The research carried out at IIT Delhi has played an important role in the technological advances made by the Indian Navy.

TROPEX 21- Indian Navy’s largest war game:

The biennial Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX 21) (Indian Navy’s largest war game) which commenced in early January, is currently underway with participation of all operational units of Indian Navy including ships, submarines, aircraft as well as units of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Coast Guard.  The exercise will culminate by third week of February.

  • The exercise is being conducted over a vast geographical expanse in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Theatre Level exercise also aims to validate Navy’s offensive-defence capabilities

  • Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Food Processing Industries have included Mandarin (a variety of Orange) and Turmeric (raw) in the list of eligible Fruits and Vegetables for 50% transportation subsidy.

Rajya Sabha passed the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2020:

Rajya Sabha passed the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2020. The bill seeks to provide for regulation, operation and planning of major ports in the country and provide greater autonomy to these ports.

  • It seeks to replace the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963.
  • The legislation provides for the creation of a Board of Major Port Authority for every major port. These Boards will replace the existing Port Trusts.

Indian government will launch the website of the “India Toy Fair- 2021”:

The website will be launched jointly by Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in New Delhi on 11.02.2021.

  • The first ever national toy fair under the aegis of ministry of textiles is being organised during 27-28 February 2021 and 1-2 March 2021.

CCEA has accepted the proposal of Grant-in-aid of Rs. 100 crore to BVFCL:

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, (CCEA) has given its nod to a proposal of the Department of Fertilizers for Grant-in-aid of 100 crore rupees to Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizers Corporation Limited (BVFCL). This aid is aimed to sustain operations of its urea manufacturing units.

  • BVFCL is a Public Sector Undertaking which is situated in North-East India.

Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves acquisition by Bank of India (“BOI”) of BOI AXA Investment Managers Private Limited (“BOIAXA IM”) and BOI AXA Trustee Services Private Limited (“BOIAXA TS”) under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002.

  • The proposed combination involves the acquisition of 49 % of the total share capital of BOI AXA IM & BOI AXA TS by BOI.
  • BOI is public sector bank constituted under the banking Companies (Acquisition & Transfer of Undertakings) Act, 1970.
  • BOI AXA TS, BOI AXA IM are private limited companies incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956.

China’s Tianwen-1 entered orbit around Mars:

China’s Mars mission, Tianwen-1 an unmanned spacecraft successfully entered orbit around Mars after a 6-1/2-month journey from Earth. This is the country’s first independent mission to the red planet.

  • Tianwen-1 will attempt to land a capsule carrying a 240kg rover in May or June.
  • If the landing is successful, the solar-powered rover will explore the Martian surface for 90 days.

Bangladesh receives USD 200 mn from World Bank:

Bangladesh has received USD 200 million for Water Sanitation, Hygiene (WASH) project for rural areas from the World Bank. The agreement was signed between the government of Bangladesh and the World Bank.

  • The WB funding will provide microcredits to both households and entrepreneurs for water and sanitation facilities. More than 3 lakh poorest households will receive fully subsidised toilets.
  • The credit from the World Bank’s International Development Association, has a 30-year term, including a five-year grace period.

25th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala:

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has inaugurated the film festival at the Nishagandhi auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram. Around 80 feature films from over 30 countries will be screened this year. Bosnian film ‘Quo Vadis, Aida?’ will be the inaugural film of the festival.

  • On account of pandemic, the festival is being held in 3 phases and different venues.
  • The duration of each phase is reduced to five days at each venue, with the first one ending on February 14 in Thiruvananthapuram. The festival will be held from February 17th to 21 in Ernakulam, February 23rd to -27th at Thalassery and from March 1st to 5th at Palakkad.

 ECONOMY

SBI revises FY21 GDP estimates to -7.0%:

State Bank of India’s Economic Research Department revised FY21 GDP estimates to -7.0%. Previously it had estimated GDP at -7.4%. Based on ‘SBI Nowcasting Model’ the GDP growth forecast for Q3 would be around 0.3%. Apart from Q3 FY21, the Q4 growth will also be in positive territory (approximately 2.5%).

  • SBI is expecting FY 22 GDP to be 11%.
  • The report says the 9.5% fiscal deficit of the Centre might be on the higher side.
