  • On June 3, 2018, the first official World Bicycle Day will be celebrated.
  • It was approved on 12 April 2018 as an official United Nations day of awareness about the multiple societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure.

Mumbai Fintech Festival

  • Maharashtra, the first State to have a dedicated fintech policy, is also planning to have a dedicated ‘Fintech Officer’ in the Department of Information Technology, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said at the inauguration of the Mumbai Fintech Festival.
  • In its efforts to develop the financial capital into a fintech hub, the Maharashtra Government has announced the opening up of a ‘sandbox’ to boost start-ups.

Girl students to get sanitary napkins at Re 1

  • Girl students of government schools in Haryana will get sanitary napkins at just Re 1 starting August.
  • Women belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families too will be covered under the scheme.

‘Taj Mahal Declaration’ to fight plastic pollution near monument

  • A pledge to Agra residents for making areas around Taj Mahal, in a radius of 500 metres, free of litter and polythene and reducing the presence of single-use plastic products near and around the monument, ahead of World Environment Day on June 5.
  • Coca Cola, Infosys and others pledge to beat plastic pollution in India.

Neonatal ambulance service project

  • To prevent death of newborns due to lack of medical emergency facilities in health centres, the Gujarat government has decided to launch a dedicated ambulance service toshift critically ill infants to better equipped hospitals.

Orchid named after Narendra Modi in Singapore

  • An orchid was named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark his visit to the National Orchid Garden of Singapore – Dendrobium Narendra Modi.

China launches new earth observation satellite

  • China today successfully launched a new earth observation (Gaofen-6) satellite launched on a Long March-2D rocket which will be mainly used in agricultural resources research and disaster monitoring, official media reported.
  • A scientific experiment satellite named Luojia-1 was sent into space at the same time. It was the 276th mission of the Long March rocket series.

Novel initiative to encourage science communication

  • The Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) initiative will each year reward 100 best articles by PhD students with cash prize of Rs.1,00,000 each and a certificate of appreciation.

NASA’s IMAP to study cosmic rays in heliosphere

  • NASA is targeting 2024 for the launch of a new mission to learn more about the generation of cosmic rays in the heliosphere, a sort of magnetic bubble surrounding and protecting our solar system.
  • The Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission will help researchers better understand the boundary of the heliosphere.

PhonePe crosses 100 million users

  • Flipkart-owned digital payments start-up PhonePe said it had overtaken Paytm to become the largest consumer payments company in the country in terms of total payment volume (TPV).

Startup to launch geared e-motorcycle

  • eMotion Motors, a Coimbatore-based start-up, will unveil a prototype of its geared electric motorcycle, Surge on June 5, World Environment Day.

  • The government set up an executive committee (EC) under the chairpersonship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “spread Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy” among the people at the national and international level.

Agni-V test-fired successfully

  • Agni-V, the ‘Big Boy’ in the country’s missile armoury, was successfully launched on Sunday from the APJ Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha. This is the sixth successful test flight of the missile.
  • The nuclear-capable, intercontinental ballistic missile has a range of over 5,000 km.

Operation ‘NISTAR’ – to rescue the Indians

  • The Indian Navy rescued 38 Indians by its ship INS Sunayna from Socotra island in Yemen where they were stranded for nearly 10 days after a severe cyclonic storm Mekenu hit the area.
