GUJARAT

Surat railway station to be 3rd in country to have ‘airport like’ facilities

  • The Surat railway station will be the third in the country and the second in Gujarat after Gandhinagar to be developed as a world-class facility under a Railway Ministry station redevelopment programme.
  • The country’s first two world-class stations — Habibganj and Gandhinagar — will be ready by the beginning of next year 2019.

Hyderabad police to go paperless

  • The Hyderabad City Police is all set to go paperless from May 1, 2018.
  • E-Office initiative would help in faster movement of files and quicker public grievance redress.
  • The Hyderabad City Police could perhaps be the first in the country to implement the paperless police station concept.

Modi honours Tibetan institute

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured a prominent institute [The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS)] of Tibetan studies with the Vaisakh Samman Prasasti Patra as part of celebrations at an event held in New Delhi to mark Buddha Purnima.
  • Government has allocated Rs.360 crore for the development of the Buddhist circuit & this will help in developing Buddhist spots in U.P., Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and A.P.,”

First Ever Joint Army exercise on Malaysian Soil

  • Exercise Harimau Shakti 2018, between the Indian Army and the Malaysian Army commenced on 30 April at Wardieburn Camp, Kuala Lumpur with a brief and impressive handing over of troops ceremony.

Swachh Bharat Mission launches GOBAR-DHAN

  • The GOBAR (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources – DHAN scheme aims to positively impact village cleanliness and generate wealth and energy from cattle and organic waste. The scheme also aims at creating new rural livelihood opportunities and enhancing income for farmers and other rural people.
  • The Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) comprises two main components for creating clean villages – creating open defecation free (ODF) villages and managing solid and liquid waste in villages.

Govt. launches Pilot scheme Procurement of Aggregate Power of 2500 MW for three years.

  • The Government has already moved out of this dichotomy and launched ‘Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana’- Saubhagya to achieve universal household electrification in the country by 31stDecember 2018.
  • This scheme is expected to revive the power demand which has affected the generators not having Power Purchase Agreements.

Mega Celebrations on Buddha Jayanti by Ministry of Culture

  • The 2562nd birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha will be celebrated with a grand event in the august presence of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, in New Delhi, on 30th April 2018.
  • The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) will celebrate the auspicious Buddha Jayanti-2018 by showcasing various facets of Buddhist traditions.
  • The Prime Minister will also be performing the offering of Sangha Dana (Cheevar Vastram and Sacred Leaf of Bodhi Tree) to the venerated Sangha.
  • The event would also house an exhibition gallery- ‘Buddham Sarnam Gacchami’ with murals, photographs and artefacts.

Study to probe risks of giant Antarctic glacier melting

  • Britain and the United States launched a $25 million project on April 30 to study the risks of a collapse of a giant glacier in Antarctica that is already shrinking and nudging up global sea levels.
  • Scientists will study the Thwaites Glacier, which is roughly the size of Florida or Britain.

Rajiv Bakshi appointed CMO of Intex Technologies

  • Intex Technologies, an Indian mobile and consumer electronics companies, announced the appointment of Rajiv Bakshi as its Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).
  • The board of directors of Kotak Mahindra Bank has redesignated Uday Kotak as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer with effect from 1 May, 2018. Mr.Kotak was earlier executive Vice Chairman and Managing Director.

  • The world’s oldest known spider has died at the ripe old age of 43 after being monitored for years during a long-term population study in
  • The trapdoor spider comfortably outlived the previous record holder, a 28-year-old tarantula found in Mexico.

BrahMos will breach mach 7 barrier in next decade

  • BrahMos, the fastest missile in the world co-developed by India and Russia, will be breaching the mach 7 barrier to be a ‘hypersonic’ system in the next decade.
  • The missile currently travels at mach 2.8 or 2.8 times the speed of sound, will touch mach 3.5 soon and mach 5 in three years.

World record for a Brazilian surfer

  • A monster wave off Portugal has produced a world record for a Brazilian surfer that overtook the previous record of 78 feet (23.77 meters) set by American Garrett McNamara in 2011.
  • The World Surf League says Rodrigo Koxa has ridden the biggest wave ever surfed.
  • At the group’s Big Wave Awards in Santa Monica, California, on 28.04.2018, it said its judges determined that a wave Koxa surfed at Naraze, Portugal was 80 feet (24.38 meters) high.

Sharath helps India beat Poland in table tennis
