In a first in 14 months since the pandemic began in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore surpassed Chennai as the district with the highest new coronavirus infections in the state. Coimbatore district recorded 4,268 new cases while Chennai registered 3,561 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday.
To control the spread of the infection, it is necessary to increase the number of testing centers and extend the entire curfew for another two weeks.
Coimbatore is becoming a ‘corona hot spot’ nationally, with a daily impact of over 4,000, making it the number one corona spread in Tamil Nadu. In the district, where there are 40 lakh people, so far more than one lakh 40 thousand people have been affected by corona; 30 thousand people are in treatment.
Considering the population and population density of Chennai, the percentage of corona spread in Coimbatore is very high.
Various reasons have been cited for the increase in coverage in Coimbatore. The main reason is that the number of corona testing laboratories is very low. The examination is conducted in 19 private laboratories in the district, with the exception of two government laboratories, the Government Hospital and the ESI Hospital.
As the situation worsens, social activists are urging the government to take some drastic measures.
Every day, more than 10,000 people are tested, but it takes a week for government laboratories to see the results. Thus, before the results are known, the infected people go outside. They spread the disease to many people. Coimbatore has many small and medium enterprises, other factories and mills. Even if someone here is infected, it quickly spreads to many of their co-workers. This is one of the reasons for the high prevalence of the disease in Coimbatore as compared to other districts.

In private laboratories, people flock to corona testing at government primary health centers because they charge so much. Therefore, the government should increase the number of laboratories and arrange for the announcement of test results within 24 hours.
