The NET/JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) exam is administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA), and it establishes a student’s eligibility to enrol in a PhD programme at an Indian university.The University Grants Commission (UGC) has amended the standards for PhD admissions, adding an entrance test to the current National Eligibility Test (NET).

However, for a PhD programme, NET/JRF qualified students must now fill 60% of the total seats for the academic year. A university/common entrance exam will fill the remaining 40% of the seats. An interview/viva-voce will be held for those who qualified through NET/JRF.The ratio of 70 (written test) to 30 (interview) will be used to choose applicants who passed the entrance exam.

“Both merit lists will be released separately”. Candidates from other categories may be requisitioned to fill vacant slots in either of the categories if seats in either of the categories remain unfilled,” the policy paper states.

The entrance exam syllabus must include questions that assess a candidate’s research/analytical/comprehension/quantitative skills, according to the law. Individual universities and colleges that have been given authorization to do so will carry it out.

“In the entrance examination held by the universities, a relaxation of 5% of marks (from 50% to 45%) should be permitted for applicants belonging to the SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layers)/Differently-abled category,” the paper continues. Follow our daily updates for regarding this.
