Pinterest Appoints Google’s Bill Ready as CEO – Ben Silbermann Becomes Executive Chairman.Pinterest names Google as its new president of payments, commerce, and the next billion users As co-founder and current CEO Ben Silbermann will take on the newly created position of executive chairman, Bill Ready will now go by the far more straightforward title of CEO of Pinterest.
Ready joined Google as president of commerce in January 2020, and in April 2021 he was promoted to his current position.
Prior to joining Google, he held the positions of CEO of Braintree and Venmo as well as executive vice president and chief operational officer of PayPal. Ben Silbermann becomes executive chairman as Google’s Bill prepares to take over as CEO.
“Bill, we are thrilled to extend this offer to you,” Silbermann said in the concluding portion of Pinterest’s offer letter to Ready, which was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. You know what it’s like to go through a transition because you were a founder yourself, and we are confident that you will guide Pinterest through its next important development and growth stage. We are eager to work with you as a team.
The following offer is made to invigorate you and help you work with the shareholders to propel Pinterest’s expansion and fulfil our goal of letting Pinners use our platform to get from inspiration to realisation. The entire board is confident in you, and we can’t wait for you to lead the “Pinployees” and advance our culture, which is based on our core principles.
In his message to Pinterest staff on Tuesday, Silbermann wrote: “One of my yearly rituals is compiling a list of ideas and goals for Pinterest. Some of such concepts become brand-new goods. Others lead to purchases. The identification of fresh leaders with abilities that complement mine was a primary goal this year. I reserved time each week on my calendar to meet leaders from a variety of businesses. Bill was distinctive,” he stated.
“He impressed me with his views, expertise, and ideals throughout months of chats and dinners,” the speaker continued. Bill is well aware that Pinterest is still in the early stages of its development. I came to the conclusion that he would make a fantastic CEO for our next phase over time. When our board of directors met him, they had the same opinion.
The turning point in Silbermann’s time as CEO may be his June 2020 admission that “elements of our culture are broken.”
