The existing “required Ph.D. requirement” will be removed if this decision is implemented.

Notably, the government intends to execute this decision as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 implementation in order to increase the number of industry professionals serving as university professors. According to multiple media sources, the UGC plans to develop new and unique professions that will no longer require a Ph.D. as a prerequisite for teaching.

On Thursday, a meeting of central university vice-chancellors (VC) with UGC chairperson Jagadesh Kumar reviewed the idea to abolish PhD as the primary prerequisite for teaching. The UGC has not stated whether these posts would be temporary or permanent, although they are likely to be maintained flexible dependent on the institute’s and expert’s needs (s).

Candidates should be aware that the plans are still in the early phases of development, and the UGC has not yet finalised them.

“Many professionals are eager to share their knowledge. There may be many applicants with extensive expertise in many sectors, but we are unable to appoint them under the current guidelines “M. Jagadesh Kumar, the head of the UGC, stated. He went on to say that a PhD would not be required; the expert would only need to have relevant expertise.

The vice-chancellors of central institutions resolved to create a committee to work on the modifications to the regulations for teacher appointments during a meeting with Kumar. Meanwhile, the UGC intends to centralise the platform in order to track, simplify, and assure the timely recruitment of professors.
