The ride-hailing startup Ola has chosen not to fire the 200 engineers it had originally planned to do so. 200 engineers were reportedly laid off in a new round of layoffs in September across the company’s ride-hailing and finance operations. At a town hall meeting presided over by some of the company’s senior tech leaders, workers were informed of the change in the plan. 10% of the engineering staff at the company would have been laid off.
The Bengaluru-based company announced at the time that it will double down on cell manufacturing, a four-wheeler project, and other efforts linked to EVs and mobility, increasing its engineering personnel to more than 5,000 in the following 18 months. ET has sent questions, but Ola has not yet responded. The current corporate decision was first reported by the newspaper Deccan Herald. Over 1,000 workers had previously been let go by Ola as it closed numerous other operations, including a used car marketplace and restaurant and grocery delivery services. The company is unsure at a time when late-stage entrepreneurs are having difficulty raising money due to adverse global macroeconomic conditions.
