Tiruppur Kumaran Birthday
Birth:
- Kumaran also known as Tiruppur Kumaran was born on 4th October 1904 was an Indian revolutionary who participated in the Indian independence movement.
- Kumaran was born in Chennimalai in Madras Presidency, British India (current Erode district in Tamil Nadu).
- He founded Desa Bandhu Youth Association and led protests against the British.
- He died from injuries sustained from a police assault on the banks of Noyyal River in Tiruppurduring a protest march against the British government on 11 January 1932.
- At the time of his death, he was holding the flag of the Indian Nationalists, which had been banned by the British giving rise to the epithet Kodi Kaththa Kumaran (Kumaran who protected the flag).
- A commemorative stamp was issued by India post in October 2004 on his 100th birth anniversary. A statue has been erected in Tirupur in his honor which is often used as a focal point for public demonstrations.
Subramaniya Siva Birth Anniversary
Birth:
- Subramaniya Siva was born in an Iyer family at Batlagundu near Dindigul in erstwhile Madurai district of Madras presidency. He was born to Rajam Iyer. He joined the Indian freedom movement in 1908.
Life and Works:
- In 1908, he was arrested by the British and was the first political prisoner in Madras jail.
- While serving a prison term, he was afflicted by leprosy and was shifted to Salem jail.
- Since leprosy was regarded as a contagious disease, the British authorities forbade him to travel by rail after his release and hence he was forced to travel on foot.
- He continued to fight for independence and was incarcerated many times until 1922.
- He eventually succumbed to leprosy on 23 July 1925.
- He was the author of the journal Jnanabhanu and books Ramanuja Vijayam and Madhva Vijayam.
Honours:
- The office of Dindugal district collector is named after as Thiagi Subramania Siva Maaligai after him. Bathlagundu bus stand is named after Siva. A memorial has been established at Papparapatti near Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district.
Events :
- World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually on October 4, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
