International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. It is observed annually on 26 June, since 1989, a date chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu’s dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, just before the First Opium War in China. The observance was instituted by General Assembly Resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987. It is often referred to by Anti-Drug campaigners as 6/26. A play on Marijuana smokers “4/20” day to celebrate cannabis.
The UN’s 2007 World Drug Report puts the value of the illegal drug trade at US$322 billion a year.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture – 26 June is held annually on 26 June to speak out against the crime of torture and to honor and support victims and survivors throughout the world.
The day was selected by the United Nations General Assembly for two reasons. First, on 26 June 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed during the midst of World War II – the first international instrument obliging UN members to respect and promote human rights. Second, 26 June 1987 was when the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect.

BIRTH :

He was Born on June 26, 1906.

He was popularly known as Ma.Po.Si was an Indian politician and the founder of the political party and freedom fighter Tamil Arasu Kazhagam. He wrote more than 100 books.
He was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Thiyagarayanagar constituency contesting as a DMK contestant in 1967. His participation in the demarcation of Tamil Nadu has made him an important figure in the state’s history.
It was in Amaravathi prison where Ma.Po.Si started his literary journey.His interest to sangam literature was kindled by the words of Subramanya Bharathi.He claimed that the simple words of Bharathi acted as a tutor to take him to the next literary level.He attributed all his literary growth to Subramanya Bharathi. Ma.Po.Si is one of the authors to have written about 10 research books on Bharathi
In 1966, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil for his biography of Vallalar – Vallalar kanda orumaipaadu. In 1972 Government of India awarded him Padma Shri for Literature & Education.

He was Died on October 3, 1995 at the age of 89.
