 International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation

  • International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is a United Nations-sponsored annual awareness day that takes place on February 6 as part of the UN’s efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation. It was first introduced in 2003.
  • About 125 million women and girls are living in 29 countries such as Africa and the Middle East, with female genital mutilation.
  • This is a serious discrimination against women.
  • It is torture and cruel and inhumane degrading treatment.
  • In 2012, the United Nations was trying to eliminate this and create awareness. The council announced this Day.
