National Sports Day

  • ‘National Sports Day’ in India is celebrated on 29th August every year.
  • It is the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend Dhyan Chand.
  • Dhyan Chand was born on 29th August 1905 in Allahabad.
  • His father Sameshwar Dutt Singh was in the British Indian Army.
  • Dhyan Chand was an Indian Hockey player widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time.
  • He is most remembered for his goal-scoring feats and for his three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932, and 1936) in field hockey.
  • He is known as “The Wizard” for his superb ball control.
  • On this day, various sporting events such as walkathon and football tournaments are held across the country as part of the National Sports Day celebration.
  • The President of India Bestows prestigious awards to the sports persons who have contributed to the growth of sports all through their sports career.

International Day against Nuclear Tests

  • The International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed on August 29.
  • The resolution in particular calls for increasing awareness “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world”.
  • The resolution was initiated by Kazakhstan together with several sponsors and cosponsors to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991.
  • Following the establishment of the International Day against Nuclear Tests, in May 2010 all state parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons committed themselves to “achieve the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons”.
