World Malaria Day (WMD)
- World Malaria Day (WMD) is an international observance commemorated every year on 25 April and recognizes global efforts to control malaria.
- Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria. In 2012, malaria caused an estimated 627,000 deaths, mostly among African children. Asia, Latin America, and to a lesser extent the Middle East and parts of Europe are also affected.
- Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease affecting humans and other animals caused by the parasitic protozoans (a group of single-celled microorganisms) belonging to the Plasmodium type.
- Malaria spreads to others only by the anopheles mosquito.
- In 1880, Charles Laurent first showed blood samples of malaria parasites in blood
Pudhumaipithan Birthday
Birth:
- He was Born on April 25, 1906.
Birth Name: Virudhachalam.
Honours:
- One of the best Tamil writers. He is considered a pioneer of modern Tamil literature.
- In 2002, the Government of Tamil Nadu nationalised the works of Pudumaippithan.
- His career as a writer began in 1933 with an essay “Gulabjaan Kaadhal” (Love for Gulab jamun) published in the magazine Gandhi
- His first short story “Aatrangarai Pillaiyaar” (Pillaiyaar on the river bank) was published in 1934 in “Manikodi” and from then on his short stories appeared regularly in it.
Pseudonyms:
- Vi, Rasamattam, Mathru, Koothan, Nandhan, Oozhiyan, Kabhali, Sukraachari and Iraval visirimadippu. For publishing poems he used the pseudonym Velur Ve. Kandasamy Pillai.
- The name “Pudhumaipithan” was the one that became famous and his also likeed.
