Diwali Will Be a School Holiday in New York City From The Next Year!!! Beginning in 2023, New York City will declare Diwali as a public school holiday. According to Mayor Eric Adams, this sends a statement about the importance of the city’s inclusivity and the “long overdue” move would encourage kids to learn about the festival of lights.

Adams stated on Thursday that he “learned so much” about Diwali and the significance of the festival of lights from talks with people while campaigning, including New York Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar and New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks.
“We wanted to convey a strong and unambiguous statement to the many people who acknowledge this season of celebration,” he said, adding that by designating Diwali as a holiday in New York City public schools.
At the same time, he said, “This is an educational moment because when we recognise Diwali, we’re going to urge kids to learn about Diwali and get them talking about what it means to celebrate the festival of lights and how to turn the light on within yourself.”
