September 22 – World Rhino Day

  • World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22 every year. World Rhino Day was first announced by WWF-South Africa in 2010.
  • It brings together NGOs, zoos, rhino sanctuaries, and concerned citizens across the globe to raise awareness and funds for the five species of rhinoceros — all of which are under threat from the illegal rhino horn trade.

September 23 – International Day of Sign Languages

  • On 19 December 2017, the UN General Assembly declared 23 September as International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL). The choice of 23 September commemorates the date the World Federation of Deaf (WDF) was established in 1951

NATIONAL AFFAIRS

National Intelligence Grid to be ready by early 2020

  • The NATGRID – a robust intelligence gathering mechanism related to immigration, banking, individual tax payers, air and train travels – is likely to be operational by January 2020.
  • The NATGRID will have data related to all immigration entry and exit, banking and financial transactions, credit card purchases, telecom, individual tax payers, air flyers, train ravelers besides others to generate intelligence inputs.

Chilahati- border railway link upgradation work inaugurated

  • Railway Minister of Bangladesh, Md. Nurul Islam Sujan and High Commissioner of India, Riva Ganguly Das laid the foundation stone at Chilahati in Bangladesh for undertaking the work of up-gradation and laying of missing tracks from Chilahati to the border with India near Haldibari.
  • The Haldibari- Chilahati railway track was part of the broad gauge main route from Kolkata to Siliguri during British undivided Trains from Bangladesh to Darjeeling via Siliguri operated till 1965 which stopped functioning after the 1965 Indo-Pak war.

National workshop on Post Disaster Needs Assessment

  • National Institute of Disaster Management is organizing a day-long National Workshop on Post Disaster Needs Assessment in New Delhi.
  • The focus of this workshop is to disseminate the outcome documents of the study to all the relevant stakeholders so that these may be utilized as a reference document while preparing the memorandum for submission to the Home Ministry in post-disaster phase.

Kargil to Kohima (K2K) Ultra Marathon – “Glory Run”

  • Kargil to Kohima (K2K) Ultra-Marathon- “Glory Run” was flagged off from Kargil War Memorial, Drass by Air Vice Marshal PM Sinha AVSM VSM, Air Officer Commanding J&K.
  • To commemorate 20th year of Kargil Victory and to live up to the true tradition and motto of IAF i.e. “Touch the Sky with Glory”, a unique expedition Kargil to Kohima (K2K) Ultra-Marathon- “Glory Run” is being undertaken by IAF from Kargil War Memorial, Drass (J&K) to Kohima War Cemetery, Kohima (Nagaland).

MoU & AGREEMENTS

Tamil Nadu Government signs pact with Gates Foundation

  • Tamil Nadu government inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) over faecal sludge treatment plants in urban local bodies across the State.
  • The foundation will support the faecal sludge treatment plants in corporations, municipalities and town panchayats

AWARDS

National Water Mission (NWM) awards 2019

  • The Irrigation, Groundwater and Rural Water Supply (Mission Bhagiratha) departments of Telangana have bagged National Water Mission (NWM) awards. The awards are given in 10 categories defined under five goals of the NWM.
  • The award function is scheduled to be held on September 25 at New Delhi and Union Minister for Jal Shakti and Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti would give away the awards.

  • The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards has kicked off. HBO’s Game of Thrones leads the pack with 32 nominations.

Rahul Aware wins bronze in 61 kg free-style category

  • Indian wrestler Rahul Aware has won a bronze medal in men’s 61 kilogram free-style category at the World Championship in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. It was India’s fifth medal at this edition of the World Championships with a total haul of 1 silver and 4 bronzes.

Amit Panghal loses in final of World Boxing Championships

  • Ace Indian boxer Amit Panghal settled for a silver at the AIBA Men’s World Boxing Championships at Ekaterinburg in Russia. He lost to Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan Zoirov in flyweight (48-52 kg) category.

Ministry of Sports to create 20 National Centres of Excellence to groom athletes

  • Ministry of Sports will create 20 National Centres of Excellence to groom athletes for 2024 and 2028 Olympics. Each Centre of Excellence will offer funds for four to six specific sports. The new scheme will ensure that athletes in the same premises have access to similar facilities unlike before.

  • Sebastian Vettel won Singapore Grand Prix while Lewis Hamilton finished fourth but stretched his championship lead to 65 points.
