September 1 – World Letter Writing Day

  • World Letter Writing Day is celebrated worldwide on September 1.
  • World Letter Writing Day was established by Richard Simpkin as a tribute to the joy and excitement he felt when a hand-written letter would arrive in his mailbox.

September 2 – World Coconut Day

  • The World Coconut Day (WCD) is observed every year on September 2 to enhance coconut farming with focus on productivity and product diversification.
  • The day is also celebrated to commemorate the formation day of Asian Pacific Coconut Community (APCC).
  • The 2019 theme is “Coconut for Family Wellness”.

September month to be celebrated as ‘Rashtriya Poshan Maah’

  • The entire month of September will be celebrated as the Rashtriya Poshan Maah.
  • This year the theme is Complementary Feeding.
  • Prime Minister’s Overreaching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment – POSHAN Abhiyaan is a multi- ministerial convergence mission with the vision to address malnutrition with a targeted approach by 2022.

CGHS services to be made available in 100 cities by 2022

  • Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan launched a new scheme of Annual Health Check-up for CGHS Central Government Health centres beneficiaries who are pensioners of the age of 75 years and above.
  • He also inaugurated state-of-the-art CGHS Bhawan in New Delhi.
  • Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that CGHS services should be made available in 100 cities by 2022.

EC launches Electors Verification Programme

  • The Election Commission launched new mega Electors Verification Programme (EVP) across the country.
  • Under the programme, a voter from each family will get a username and password, allowing a person to upload all documents related to electoral registration and tag similar details about his or her family members.

Country’s longest electrified rail tunnel

  • In Andhra Pradesh, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu dedicated the country’s longest electrified rail tunnel between Cherlopalli and Rapuru and the electrified railway line between Venkatachalam and Obulavaripalli. The length of the rail tunnel is 6.6 kilometre.

Fire and Fury Corps celebrates 20th Raising Day

  • The elite Fire and Fury Corps on September 1 celebrated its 20th raising day at Leh, with all its personnel reaffirming their wholehearted support to the people of Ladakh region.
  • It was on September 1, 1999, in the aftermath of the Kargil War that this elite Corps was raised.

Varun Dhawan’s ‘Coolie No.1’ first Bollywood film set to go plastic-free

  • Bollywood has taken lead to promote India’s plastic free movement with Varun Dhawan’s upcoming movie “Coolie No. 1” becoming the first Bollywood film to go plastic-free.
  • The movie’s producer Deepshikha Deshmukh announced on twitter today that the movie is going plastic free and urged her peers to do the same.

Final NRC list of Assam published

  • In Assam, the Final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list was released. Names of 3.11 crore applicants have been included whereas 19.07 lakh have been excluded from the list.
  • Any person who is not satisfied with the outcome of the claims and objections can file appeal before the Foreigners Tribunals. They can appeal against their exclusion in the Foreigners’ Tribunals and subsequently, move higher courts.
  • Assam government will establish 400 Foreigners’ Tribunals in the state to deal with such appeals.

Biggest congregation of Dawoodi Bohra sect being held in Colombo

  • The biggest congregation of Dawoodi Bohra sect is being held in Sri Lankan capital of Colombo with participation of more than twenty thousand community members.
  • Spiritual guru of the community His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin conducted the first sermon of Ashara Mubaraka in Husaini Masjid.

  • An expert advisory committee of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved the first phase of a global registry to track research on human genome editing as the UN’s international public health monitor seeks to address the ethical and regulatory challenges surrounding promising new technologies to address gene based treatments.
