November 17- International Students Day

  • International Students’ Day is an international observance of the student community, held annually on November 17. Originally commemorating the Czech universities which were stormed by Nazis in 1939 and the students who were subsequently killed and sent to concentration camps, it is now marked by a number of universities, sometimes on a day other than November 17, as a nonpolitical celebration of the multiculturalism of their international students.
  • The date commemorates the anniversary of the 1939 Nazi storming of the University of Prague after demonstrations against the German occupation of Czechoslovakia and the killings of Jan Opletal and worker Vaclav Sedlacek.

Czech Republic: Anti-government protests mark 30th anniversary of Velvet Revolution

  • In Czech Republic, lakhs of people took to the streets in the capital Prague as part of major anti-government protests. Demonstrators are demanding for Prime Minister Andrej Babis to resign over allegations of fraud. It is alleged Babis used European Union subsidies for his private business. Protest was organized by activist group Million Moments for Democracy, which has staged numerous protests against the government of Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, urging him to resign.The protest was held on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, which ended communist rule in what was then Czechoslovakia.

President Kovind witnesses exhibition of paintings at Rashtrapati Bhawan

  • President Ram Nath Kovind witnessed an exhibition of paintings set up by the Artists-in-Residence at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The President also felicitated the artists. During their stay at Rashtrapati Bhawan, the artists put their creativity on canvas and also mentored around 65 school children. The art works created by these children were also in display at the exhibition.
  • The aim of the programme is to provide artists an opportunity to stay in Rashtrapati Bhawan and be a part of the life there. The visitors to the Rashtrapati Bhawan Museum can witness the exhibition of these paintings from 19th to 24th of this month between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Entry will be from Gate Number 30 of Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Yogi Adityanath inaugurates North India’s 1st sugar mill which will produce ethanol

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has inaugurated North India’s first sugar mill which will produce ethanol direct from sugarcane.The mill was inaugurated in Pipraich area of Gorakhpur. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister said his government is working to restore the pride of Sugar Bowl’ of east Uttar Pradesh.

6th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus to be held in Thailand

  • The 6th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with 17 other Defence Ministers of ADMM-Plus countries will attend the meeting.On the sidelines of ADMM-Plus, RakshaMantri held bilateral meetings with US Secretary of Defence Dr Mark T Esper, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand General PrawitWongsuwan, Defence Minister of Japan Mr Taro Kono, Defence Minister of Australia Ms Linda Reynolds and Defence Minister of New Zealand Mr Ron Mark.
  • It was RakshaMantri’s first meeting with US Secretary of Defence. Both the leaders expressed satisfaction over the increasing defence engagements between the two countries and looked forward to meeting again for the 2+2 meeting in Washington DC later next month.

Amit Shah launches special winter-grade diesel for use in high-altitude regions of Ladakh through video-conference

  • Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah launched the the first Winter-Grade Diesel outlet for Ladakh region, which will help to address the problem faced by people due to loss of fluidity in Diesel fuel during extreme winter conditions. He said, the winter grade diesel produced by Panipat Refinery for the first time has a pour point of – 33degreeCelsius and does not lose its fluidity function even in the extreme winter weather of the region unlike the normal grade of Diesel which becomes exceedingly difficult to utilize.
  • Shri Shah said that the government led by Shri NarendraModi was committed since 2014 to bring the region of Ladakhat par with the rest of the country, which wasneglected for the last 70 years. He said that the abrogation of Article 370 was a step in that direction.

Yediyurappa to inaugurate three day Bengaluru Tech Summit

  • Karnataka Chief Minister B.S.Yediyurappa will inaugurate the three day Bengaluru Tech Summit at the Bangaluru Palace.More than 3500 delegates, 12,000 visitors and 200 speakers will be part of the three day Bengaluru Tech Summit. 250 Exhibitors will showcase their services, products, and technologies to visitors. The summit is expected to be attended by global tech leaders, investors, industry captains, research heads, policymakers and startups from India and 20 foreign countries.

National Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2019

  • Vice President of India presents ‘National Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2019′ on the occasion of National Press Day.On the occasion of National Press Day, the Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu awarded the winners of ‘National Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2019′ at New Delhi. The journalists in different areas were honoured for their outstanding and exemplary work in journalism at an event organized by Press Council of India.
  • Vice President highlighted the significance and the role of media. He emphasized that ever since the launch of the first newspaper in India-‘The Bengal Gazette’ by James Augustus Hickey in 1780, the press has been playing an outstanding role in empowering the people.

Justice Dr Ravi Ranjan takes oath as Chief Justice of Jharkhand HC

  • Justice Dr Ravi Ranjan took oath as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court today. He was administered the oath of office by Governor DraupadiMurmi in a simple ceremony at Raj Bhawan. Chief Minister Raghuwar Das, judges of the Jharkhand High Court and other dignitaries were present at the function. Justice Dr Ravi Ranjan has been appointed as the 13th Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. The post was lying vacant since May this year after the former Chief Justice, Anirudh Bose was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa wins Sri Lanka Presidential election

  • Sri Lanka’s former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has won the Presidential election. He is the brother of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Gotabaya got 52.25 per cent of the total valid votes Premadasa has conceded defeat and congratulated Gotabaya on his victory.Gotabaya will be sworn in as the new President . He served as the Defence Secretary during the end of the LTTE War

Justice Bobde to take over as 47th Chief Justice of India

  • Justice SA Bobde took over as 47th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on 18 Nov 2019. President Ram NathKovind will administer him the oath of office at RashtrapatiBhavan. Justice Bobde will succeed justice RanjanGogoi, who retired on 17 Nov 2019.He will have a tenure of around 18 months till his retirement on April 23, 2021

  • Laishram Sarita Devi of Manipur is among the six boxers from 5 continents who were elected as members of AIBA Athletes Commission. Laishram Sarita Devi was inspired by Muhammad Ali’s achievements, and turned professional in boxing in the year 2000. She is DSP in Manipur Police.

First Night trial of surface-to-surface medium-range missile Agni-II

  • India has successfully conducted the first night trial of Agni-II, its versatile surface-to-surface medium-range nuclear-capable missile from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast.Agni-II, an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), has already been inducted into the armed forces.This was the first time that the sophisticated missile was test fired at night.

  • Indian women clinched five gold while two men bagged silver at Asian Youth Boxing Championship in Mongolia. Naorem Chanu (51kg), Vinka (64kg) SanamachaChanu (75kg), Poonam (54kg) and Sushma (81kg) won Gold for the country in a phenomenal sweep.

Seven Indian boxers enter finals of Asian Youth Boxing Championship

  • Seven Indian boxers – two men and five women – have entered the finals of Asian Youth Boxing Championship at Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.Among the men, Selay Soy (49kg) and AnkitNarwal (60kg) made the summit clashes, while NaoremChanu (51kg), Vinka (64kg) SanamachaChanu (75kg), Poonam (54kg) and Sushma (81kg) made to the finals.

England qualifies for UEFA Euro 2020 football tournament

England has qualified for the UEFA Euro 2020 football tournament and also become the top scorer with 38 goals in 2019. This is England’s second-highest number ever and the highest since achieving the same total in 1966.
