Important Day:

May 01 – World Labor Day

  • Labour Day began in Chicago as a protest campaign to support eight-hour workday. On May 1, 1886, workers took to the streets across the United States to reduce the workday to eight-hour shifts.
  • Labour Day Or May Day is called Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din in India. In India, the first Labour day or May Day was celebrated in the year 1923. It was the Labour Kisan Party who had organised the May Day celebrations in Chennai (then Madras).
  • The theme of International Labour Day 2019 is “Sustainable Pension for all: The Role of Social Partners”.

IGNOU to begin course on GST

  • The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) announced that it was beginning a programme on Goods and Services Tax (GST) in collaboration with the Bombay Stock Exchange Institute Limited from its July 2019 session.

Andhra Pradesh:

Selvaraj is NABARD CGM in A.P. region

  • Selvaraj has taken charge as the Chief General Manager (CGM) of Andhra Pradesh Regional Office of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

 Lifetime Achievement Award for Sobha Naidu

  • Eminent Kuchipudi dancer and Padma Sri Awardee Sobha Naidu was presented Lifetime Achievement Award by Nartanasala Dance Academy at the All-India Dance Festival organised at Vizianagaram.

Tamil Nadu:

Kyrgyzstan women officers get training in OTA

  • Five women officers of the Kyrgyzstan Defence Forces picked up rifles and fired shots at the target at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai. Weapons training is one of the many activities undertaken by the five Kyrgyz women officers for the past two weeks at OTA.

Maharashtra:

104 Mumbai cops to get DG’s Insignia

  • The DGP presents the award every year on Maharashtra Day to police personnel selected from across ranks based on their track record and incidents where they displayed exemplary action. This year, of the 800 personnel to be honoured from all over the State, 104 are from Mumbai.

Amazon Pay enables instant money transfer on Android

  • Amazon Pay launched person-to-person (P2P) payments for Android users who can now make instant bank-to-bank transfers using the UPI platform on the Amazon app.

 Bharti Airtel launches Wynk Tube music app

  • Bharti Airtel launched a music application Wynk Tube an extension of its existing Wynk Music app. Wynk Tube will allows users to stream audio and video of popular tracks within the same interface.

Economic Affairs:

Amazon eyes $5 bn in exports from India

  • E-commerce giant Amazon’s Global Selling programme has achieved a significant milestone of $1 billion in cumulative e-com exports sales from India in the last three years. E-tailer clocks $1 billion in three years, records 56% growth in Indian e-com exporter count for 2018.

  • Contracts for Sixteen Anti Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) ships have been signed for construction of eight ships each from M/s CSL, Kochi and GRSE, Kolkata respectively. International Affairs:

Japan gets a new Emperor

  • Japan welcomed the start of a new Reiwa imperial era and a new emperor, Emperor Naruhito (59) was formally invested after his father, Akihito, 85, stepped down. Akihito, the first Japanese monarch to abdicate in two centuries, became an active symbol of peace, reconciliation and democracy during his three-decade Heisei era.

 Sports Affairs:

Sindhu, Saina, Srikanth to lead Indian challenge

  • P.V. Sindhu, K. Srikanth and Saina Nehwal will lead the Indian challenge at the Sudirman Cup mixed team badminton championships at Nanning (China) from May 19 to 26.
