Nagaland
Dzükou Valley becomes Plastic Free Zone
  • In Nagaland, the scenic Dzükou Valley has become Plastic Free Zone on the occasion of World Environment Day.The much-appreciated initiative on declaring this scenic valley as a ‘plastic-free zone’ was taken by Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) in accordance with its pledge to conserve and protect the environment.

24X7 helpline for medical students
  • The Indian Medical Association is planning to set up counselling centres at all medical colleges and teaching institutions and a 24×7 helpline to help students deal with mental health issues. The IMA has launched an initiative named Doctors 4 Doctors (D4D) aimed at preventing burn out, addressing mental health challenges and reducing incidents of suicide among residents and clinicians.
Swachh Survekshan 2020
  • Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched Swachh Survekshan 2020 League in New Delhi.
  • The objective of the Swachh Survekshan survey, which is conducted by an independent third party, is to encourage large scale citizen participation, ensure sustainability of initiatives taken towards garbage free and open defecation free cities and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a better place to live in.

Russia launches first Arctic train service
  • In Russia, the first tourist train traveling through Russia’s Arctic region and on to Norway, set off from St. Petersburg station with 91 passengers aboard for the inaugural trial journey. The train, named “Zarengold” (“The Tsar’s gold” in German) complete with two restaurant cars will travel from Saint Petersburg through Petrozavodsk, the historic town of Kem and Murmansk.

China launches its first sea-based space rocket
  • China launched a space rocket from sea for the first time. A Long March 11 rocket was launched from a ship in the Yellow Sea. China now spends more than Russia and Japan on its civil and military space programmes — unveiling ambitious plans for missions to the moon and beyond in the coming decade.

 Business & Economic Affairs

Global growth to slow in 2019, says World Bank
  • The World Bank Group has downgraded global real GDP growth to 2.6% for 2019, down by 0.3% age points from its previous forecast in January. Growth is expected to be increase marginally to 2.7% in 2020. India’s growth forecasts are projected to be 7.5% per annum in 2019, 2020 and 2021 — not having been downgraded from their January estimates. A growth rate of 7.2% is estimated for 2018.

Banking Affairs

RBI cuts interest rate by 25 bps, revises GDP growth to 7%
  • The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India reduced the repo rate at its third meeting this year by 25 basis points to 5.75% to address growth concerns. The RBI has revised GDP growth projection for the current financial year from 7.2% to 7%.

Bank of China starts India operations

  • Bank of China, one of the four largest state-run commercial banks of China, has started India operations with a maiden branch in Mumbai. “The launch of Chinese bank in India comes after a series of successful meetings between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2018 to strengthen the strategic engagement between the 2 countries.

  • International Federation of Hockey men’s series Finals began in Bhubaneswar.
  • In the first match USA defeated South Africa by 2 goals. The second match will be held between Poland and Uzbekistan. Eight-time champions, India will start its campaign against Russia .
Indian Junior women’s hockey team clinch Cantor Fitzgerald U21
  • The Indian junior women’s hockey team clinched the Cantor Fitzgerald U21 International 4-Nations title after beating Ireland 1-0 in the final at Dublin, Ireland.
