June 26 – International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

  • UN General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
  • 2019 Theme:- “Health for Justice. Justice for Health”.

June 26 – International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

  • UN General Assembly proclaimed 26 June the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Today, the Convention has been ratified by 162 countries.

TAMIL NADU

Tamil Nadu slips 6 places in health index

  • Tamil Nadu has slipped six places in the health index released by NITI Aayog. The State has registered the largest decline in its ranking, from third in 2015-16 to ninth in 2017-2018.

INTERNATIONAL

55 Asia-Pacific countries unanimously back India’s bid for non-permanent seat at UNSC

  • Fifty-five countries of the Asia-Pacific group at the United Nations unanimously endorsed India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat of the Security Council for a two-year term in 2021-2022.
  • Until now, India has been a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for seven terms: 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, 1991-92 and most recently in 2011–2012 under the leadership of former Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri.

Campaign ‘Zero Chance’

  • The Australian government is launching a campaign ‘Zero Chance’ to raise awareness among people trying to enter the country illegally by boats.
  • Those who wish to enter the country must apply through refugees resettlement programmes, and Australia works with the UNHCR to identify those people.

India-Pakistan clash over Nizam of Hyderabad funds in UK

  • A decades-old legal dispute between India and Pakistan over around 35 million pounds belonging to the Nizam of Hyderabad at the time of Partition in 1947 and deposited in a London bank account has reached an important stage in the UK High Court.

  • President Donald Trump named Stephanie Grisham, the chief White House Press Secretary.

Dhindsa re-elected CFI chief

  • Parminder Singh Dhindsa has been unanimously re-elected the president of the Cycling Federation of India (CFI). Maninder Pal Singh and Pratap Jadhav have been elected as secretary general and treasurer respectively.

MoU, AGREEMENTS & CABINET APPROVALS

India signs Loan Agreement with the World Bank

  • The Government of India, the Government of Uttarakhand and the World Bank signed a Loan Agreement of $31.58 million for the Uttarakhand Public Financial Management Strengthening Project that will help improve the State’s ability to manage its Financial Systems and lead to Better Utilization of Development Resources.
  • This project will support the State Government’s initiative to build and modernize the Technical and Financial Management Capabilities of its Local Bodies and theState-owned Enterprises.

4 Plastic Parks approved for implementation in Phase-I                       

  • Shri Gowda stated that in phase-I of the scheme, four Plastic parks in the States of Assam (Tinsukia), Madhya Pradesh (Raisen), Odisha (Jagatsinghpur) & Tamil Nadu (Thiruvallur) are approved for implementation till 2019-20.

India proposes to host 2023 IOC session in Mumbai

  • India proposed to host the 2023 International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai, which is expected to choose the host city for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
  • Italian city named as host of 2026 Winter Olympics.
  • India has earlier hosted an IOC Session in 1983 in New Delhi.
