Important Days

June 21 – International Day of Yoga
  • On 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.
  • 2019 Theme: Climate Action
June 21 – World Music Day
  • Music Day is a connected set of free public events which takes place each year on the 21st June, our midsummer. Each year there are events in over 120 countries and 700 cities around the world, not including France where there were too many events to count! It was originated in France in 1982.
June 21 – Summer Solstice
  • The summer solstice is on June 21 and it will be the longest day of 2019 for anyone living north of the equator. The summer solstice occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer, or 23.5 degrees north latitude

National Affairs

Integrated Grievance Cell & Call Center of Department of Pensions
  • The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Integrated Grievance Cell & Call Center for Pensioners set up by the Department of Pension and Pensioners Welfare. The Center has been launched for Central Government pensioners at Janpath Bhawan, in New Delhi.

Andhra Pradesh

Andhra will soon have a women protection wing
  • An exclusive State-level women protection wing will be set soon to handle cases/complaints pertaining to them, Minister for Home and Disaster Management M. Sucharita has said. It will be headed by a senior officer and be vested with powers to handle issues such as harassment, eve teasing, dowry cases, and missing of minors. A toll-free number will also be allotted to the wing.

Kerala

India’s first solar-powered cruise boat to be rolled out in December
  • Kerala is gearing up for the launch of the country’s premier solar-powered cruise boat Aditya by December. A Rs. 3 crore cruise boat that can carry 100 passengers is under construction at a boatyard in Aroor. The hybrid vessel will be powered by a motor that can source energy from solar panels, battery, and generator.

Telangana

Asia’s biggest open-to-sky surge pool in Telangana
  • As part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP), the “Asia’s biggest open-to-sky Surge pool” was constructed in Thippapur village of Illanthakunta mandal. Measuring 92 m deep and 56 m diameter, the surge pool was constructed to store one tmc ft of water and lifts the same through motors to the Ananthagiri Reservoir in Siddipet and later to the Mallannasagar project.

International

Mexico ratifies US-Mexico-Canada agreement
  • Mexico has ratified the US-Mexico-Canada agreement. This makes it the first country to give the new North American trade deal final approval despite recent tensions with the US. The Mexican government called the deal’s passage a clear message in favor of an open economy and deepening economic integration in the region.
  • President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador claimed the deal would bring in more foreign investment and jobs in Mexico, and access to the US market. The deal aims to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which helped turn Mexico into an exporting powerhouse over the past 25 years.

Defence

Government issues EOI for shortlisting Strategic Partners for P-75(I)
  • As a major initiative towards Make in India, the government has issued the Expression of Interests for shortlisting of potential Indian Strategic Partners for construction of six conventional submarines for P-75(I) Project of the Indian Navy. The project cost is about 45 thousand crore rupees. It is the second project being undertaken under the latest Strategic Partnership Model, with the first being the procurement of 111 Naval Utility Helicopters.
Navy launches operation in Gulf for Indian vessels’ security
  • Indian Navy has deployed Ships INS Chennai and INS Sunayna in the Gulf of Oman to re-assure Indian Flagged Vessels operating or transiting through the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman following the maritime security incidents in the region.

Awards for Outstanding Contribution for Promotion & Development of Yoga 2019
  • Prime Minister’s Awards for outstanding contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga – 2019 has been announced. Ayush Ministry in a release said, Swami Rajarshi Muni of Life Mission, Gujarat, Ms. Antonietta Rozzi of Italy, Bihar School of Yoga, Munger and Japan Yoga Niketan, Japan are the recipients of the Award. The award is given for outstanding contribution for promotion and development of Yoga.

Sports

Women’s cricket in 2022 Common wealth games
  • Women’s cricket is set to be part of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games as the CGF nominated its inclusion in the 2022 edition.The nomination was made at the Executive Board meeting of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). Cricket has made just one appearance at the CWG previously, with men playing in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, where South Africa stood on top of the podium.
58th Ostrava Golden Spike athletics meet
  • Asian silver medallist Annu Rani, who has been steady in the 60m range this season, won the women’s javelin bronze in the 58th Ostrava Golden Spike athletics meet, an IAAF World Challenge event in Czech Republic.
Asian Junior Badminton Championship 2019
  • India named a 23-member squad to represent the country at the Asian Junior Badminton Championship. The tournament will be held in Suzhou, China from 20th of next month.
