July 17: World Day For International Justice
  • World Day for International Justice recognizes the nascent and strengthening system of international justice that has emerged since the Nuremburg and Tokyo Trials after World War II. July 17th was chosen as the day to mark this occasion because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the ICC.
  • The ICC is the first permanent and independent international judicial institution capable of trying individuals accused of the most serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, including the crimes of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

NATIONAL AFFAIRS

Health Ministry to launch a Jan Jagrukta Abhiyaan
  • Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is all set to launch a special campaign in Delhi to sensitize and mobilise the community on measures for prevention and control of Vector Borne Diseases (VBDs) like Malaria, Dengue and Chikungunya. The three –day campaign will start from 17th July, 2019. Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare stated that this three-day campaign is aimed at making the community a partner for checking vector/mosquito breeding across Delhi.

MAHARASHTRA

Maharashtra government hikes compensation for kin of Jawans killed in line of duty
  • Maharashtra government has decided to increase the compensation from 25 lakh to one crore rupees for families of security personnel hailing from the state who lay down their lives in the line of duty. The Cabinet also decided to raise the allowances for special teachers attached with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan by 1500 rupees, taking it to 21,500 rupees. The decision will benefit over 1900 teachers.

India and Italy set up Fast –Track Mechanism to Facilitate investors and Companies
  • In order to facilitate Italian companies and investors in India and Indian companies and investors in Italy, it has been decided to establish fast-track system for companies and investors of both the countries. The key objectives of the fast – track system in India will be to pave the way for and identify and solve problems faced by Italian companies and investors with their operations in India.
Christine Lagarde resigns as managing director of IMF
  • International Monetary Fund, IMF managing director Christine Lagarde has resigned ahead of a decision on her nomination to become head of the European Central Bank, ECB. If the European Council approves Ms Lagarde’s ECB nomination, she will become the central bank’s first-ever female leader, responsible for the Euro and the monetary policy of the eurozone.

India-Uzbekistan hold meet on counter-terrorism
  • The 8th meeting of India-Uzbekistan Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism was held in New Delhi. The Group discussed measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the sphere of counter-terrorism through information sharing, mutual capacity building and sharing of best practices.

European Commission elects first female president
  • German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has been elected as the European Commission’s first female president. The 60-year-old German Minister called for a united and strong Europe, after being elected.

Arjuna Awards
  • Shri Kiren Rijuju, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports today gave Arjuna Awards to Ms. Smriti Mandhana (Cricket) and Shri Rohan Bopanna (Tennis) in a ceremony held in New Delhi. Ms. Smriti Mandhana and Shri Rohan Bopanna were selected for Arjuna Awards 2018 for their outstanding achievements in the sports disciplines of Cricket and Tennis respectively.
Indian entries bag six awards at SAARC Film Festival
  • Indian entries bagged six awards including the Best Feature Film for the movie Nagarkirtan at the 9th SAARC Film Festival held in Colombo. Kaushik Ganguly got Best Director Award. Riddhi Sen won the best actor award for the movie while Prabuddha Bannerjee bagged Best Original Score at the film Festival.

21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship
  • The 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship began in Cuttack on July 17 . Twelve countries including Australia, England and Malaysia are participating in the event. The event will conclude on 22nd of this month.
Vijayveer wins his 3rd gold at Junior Shooting World Cup
  • Vijayveer Sidhu picked up his third gold medal of the ongoing ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany, combining with Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu and Adarsh Singh to clinch the men’s 25m pistol event. India maintained its top spot at the medal standings after day three with 7 gold 7 Silver and 2 Bronze in a total of 16 medals won so far. China is second with 5 Gold 3 Silver and 5 bronze.
