77th anniversary of Quit India movement

  • The 77th anniversary of the August Kranti Din, which is considered as one of the important milestones in the history of freedom struggle of our country, is observed on August 08.
  • On this date in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a call to end the British rule and launched the Quit India Movement at the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai.

UP extends bilateral cooperation MoU with Netherlands in several fields

  • Uttar Pradesh government and Netherlands have extended the existing bilateral agreement of cooperation in several fields by another five years.
  • The MoU inked earlier, sought cooperation and exchange of the knowledge and techniques in the fields of solid waste management, spatial planning, water management including restoration of water bodies and mobility planning.

30th anniversary of the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai

  • The 30th anniversary of the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation was celebrated in Chennai. The Research Foundation was established by Dr MS Swaminathan in 1988 in Tamilnadu.
  • It is involved in research and community outreach programmes in various states of India and a few foreign countries.

2019 is the United Nations’ International Year of Indigenous Languages

  • The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.
  • The Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea has the highest number of ‘living’ indigenous languages in the world (840), while India stands fourth with 453.

US approves sale of helicopters to S Korea

  • The US government has approved the sale of 12 multi-mission Seahawk helicopters to South Korea worth 800 million US dollar.
  • The helicopters bolster anti-surface and anti-submarine missions and can handle secondary missions like replenishment, search and rescue and communications relay.The two countries have been in a security alliance since the 1950-53 Korean war.

Ocean warming, overfishing increase methylmercury toxin in fish

  • The amount of toxin that gets accumulated in certain fish which are higher in the food chain have been found to increase. The researchers warn that human exposure to the toxin through fish consumption is bound to increase as a result of climate change.

BANKING AFFAIRS

RBI lowers repo rate by 35 basis points to 5.40%

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to lower interest rate for the fourth consecutive policy review as it reduced repo rate by 35 bps to 5.40%.
  • Repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends money to commercial banks in the event of any shortfall of funds.

APPOINTMENTS

New DGP of Puducherry

  • Balaji Srivastava assumed charge as the new Director General of Police of the Union Territory . He replaces S. Sundari Nanda, who has been transferred to Delhi.
  • Srivastava, a 1988 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, earlier served as the DGP of Mizoram.

Women’s world boxing championships

  • Six-time world champion M C Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain have been selected for the upcoming women’s world boxing championships based on their recent performances. The world championships are scheduled from October 3 to 13 in Russia.
