National News

The President of India has inaugurated the “Festival of Libraries 2023”.
  • President of India Draupadi Murmu inaugurated the “Festival of Libraries 2023” at the grand Pragati Maidan in the national capital, New Delhi.
  • The festival is organized by the Ministry of Culture and will be held over two days. Also, this conference is being held with the aim of digitization and modernization of small and central libraries in India.

Four MoUs have been signed between the GOI and the Government of Nepal for development in the water management and sanitation sector.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) was signed by the High Commission of India in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu on August 04 2023 to undertake four High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal to provide better education facilities, water management facilities and health facilities in the country.
  • Accordingly, this MoU aims to implement two school buildings in Darchula district of Sudurpaschim, one school in Sankhuwasabha district of Koshi and construction of a health project in Udayapur district by the government officials of Triyuga Municipality.

Oil India is awarded “Maharatna Status”.
  • The Union Finance Ministry has recently approved the upgrade of Oil India Limited to the highest category of ‘Maharatna’.
  • It is significant that the company has emerged as the “13th Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) of India” after being upgraded to this higher category.

The Union Home Minister launches the Portal of the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS).
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah launches the Portal of Central Cooperative Societies (CRCS) in Pune, Maharashtra on August 06.
  • Samriti Initiative The Ministry of Cooperatives is taking several initiatives to strengthen the Central Cooperative movement in the country. It is significant that this Portal has been launched with the aim of promoting ease of doing business in the cooperative sector and computerization of the central cooperative sector.

International news

Pakistan to set up new commission to prevent money laundering and financing of terrorism
  • Pakistan’s Parliament on August 4 approved a resolution to set up a new empowered commission to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing.
  • This action is aimed at preventing Pakistan from being included in the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) “Grey List” , the country’s administration said. It is notable that Pakistan has been placed in the black list of FATF for some time before this.

The Union Finance Minister has laid the foundation stone for a world-class international museum at Adichanallur, Tamil Nadu.
  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid the foundation stone for a world-class international museum at Adichanallur near Srivaikundam in Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu on August 05, 2023.
  • The ASI’s museum is located almost one kilometer away from the “on-site” museum at Adichanallur. It is notable that the museum at Adichanallur is an important part of the Union Government’s initiative announced in Budget 2020 to revitalize the country’s tourism sector by establishing world-class international museums across India.

The Rajasthan state government has approved a resolution to create 19 new districts.
  • The Rajasthan Cabinet has on August 04 2023 approved the Central High Level Committee’s proposal for creation of nearly 19 new districts and three new zonal divisions in the state.
  • Rajasthan Additional Chief Secretary Aparna Arora said that with this approval, there will be 50 districts in Rajasthan state. It is reported that this division has been undertaken for administrative engagements.

Appointments

Anand Maheshwari was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of Honeywell’s high growth divisions.
  • Anand Maheshwari, former head of Microsoft India, has been appointed president and CEO of US firm Honeywell’s high-growth regional division, the company said on 4 August 2023.
  • With this appointment, he will assume his new role from September 4, 2023 and present his development report to Honeywell CEO Vimal Kapoor.

Justice Jayant Nath has been appointed as the interim chairman of DERC.
  • The Supreme Court on August 04 issued an order appointing Jayant Nath, a former judge of the Delhi High Court, as the interim chairman of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).
  • Earlier, on July 20, he was appointed as the interim DERC chief after the LG and the Delhi government failed to reach a consensus on who would head the regulatory body.

ISRO plans to privatize huge satellite technology
  • In its latest announcement, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has transferred its state-of-the-art IMS-1 satellite vehicle technology to a private company called Alpha Design Technologies through technology transfer.
  • The transfer is part of ISRO’s main business unit NewSpace India Organization (NSIL), which is an important part of efforts to further develop the private space sector.

The 132nd Durand Cup series has been inaugurated by the Union Defense Minister in Assam.
  • The 132nd Durand Cup series was inaugurated by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on August 05 at the SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar District, Assam.
  • It is notable that the Assam State Government and the Bodo Regional Council and the Indian Army have jointly organized this grand event.

The Indian combined team has created a historic record by winning gold at the World Archery Championships.
  • The Indian women’s combined team of Parneet Kaur,  Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Aditi Swami defeated Mexico to win the gold medal in the final of the 2023 World Archery Championship held on August 04.
  • It is notable that the Indian team defeated the Mexican team by 235-229 points in this final match and achieved this historic victory. It is significant that this is the first time the Indian team has won the World Championship title since its debut at the World Archery Championship held in Italy in 1981.

Indian team wins bronze medal in women’s 20km race walk for 2023
  • Team India won the bronze medal in the women’s 20km race walk team event at the 2023 World University Games held in Chengdu, China.
  • It is notable that the Indian team consisting of Priyanka, Pooja Kumawat, Nikita Lamba and Mansi Negi finished in 5:12:13 minutes and won this medal. It is also notable that in this series China (4:52:02) and Slovakia (5:05:36) won the gold and silver medals respectively and are leading the rankings.

Hiroshima Day 2023
  • Every year on August 6th, Hiroshima Day is observed in various countries to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, a major industrial city in Japan, at the end of World War II in 1945.
  • The blast killed more than 2,00,000 civilians within seconds and injured a few thousand. The name “Little Boy” of this powerful atomic bomb is significant.
