October 17 – International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on October 17 each year since 1993. It promotes people’s awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution worldwide, particularly in developing countries.
  • 2018 theme – “Coming together with those furthest behind to build an inclusive world of universal respect for human rights and dignity”

NITI Aayog launches guidelines for Public-Private partnership in NCDs

  • NITI Aayog launched the model guidelines for Public – Private partnership in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). As per the guidelines, the private partner will invest in upgrading, building and deploying human resources.

NGT fines Delhi government Rs 50 crores

  • The National Green Tribunal has fined the Delhi government 50 crore rupees for its “failure” to take action against steel pickling units in residential areas as they fall under the prohibited list of industrial activity.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu CM announces 3% sub-quota in recruitments for sportspersons

  • The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has announced that sportspersons would be given three percent sub-quota for recruitments in Government Departments and public sector undertakings.

INTERNATIONAL

Palestinians win UN backing to lead developing country bloc

  • The Palestinians have won backing to lead the biggest bloc of developing countries at the United Nations.
  • The General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to grant the observer-state of Palestine temporary rights to act as chair of the Group of 77 plus China, a bloc that has grown to 134 countries at the United Nations.

Third parliamentary elections in Bhutan

  • The stage is set for third parliamentary elections in Bhutan.

Festival of Fulpati

  • The festival of Fulpati was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour in various parts of Nepal. In Nepali, “Phool” means flower and “Pati” means leaves and plants.

US announces fresh sanctions on Iran

  • The United States Treasury has announced fresh sanctions on Iran, targeting banks and investment companies.

Ethiopian prime minister’s new cabinet has 50% women

  • Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed formed a new cabinet with 50% women.

RBI issues guidelines to facilitate payments among PPI

  • In a move aimed at promoting digital transactions, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released operational guidelines to facilitate payments among prepaid instruments (PPI) such as mobile wallets.

  • Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) is leading a contingent of 45 exhibitors, representing various sectors of the construction industry like building materials, construction equipment, interior furnishing, manufacturing and marketing of ceramic vitrified tiles to Expo Cihac in Mexico City.

Road Show for Phase II of Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves launched

  • Government of India’s one of the key initiative towards energy security of the country – the strategic petroleum reserves program, envisions creation of additional crude oil reserves facilities in Private Public Partnership (PPP) mode and the road show for the same was launched in New Delhi by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas ( MoP&NG) and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (SDE).
