March 01 – Zero Discrimination Day

  • Zero Discrimination Dayis observed on March 1 and it aims to address the issue of discrimination faced by people across the world. The day further intend to achieve equality before law throughout all member countries of the UN.
  • Theme – ‘Act to change laws that Discriminate’.

New Delhi

Number of deaths on account of accidents comes down by 81%

  • Railway Ministry said that the number of deaths on account of accidents has come down by 81 per cent in the last five years. The Ministry said the major priority for the Railways has been safety and security of its passenger.

Government extends ban on SIMI

  • The government has extended ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), which was involved in a series of terror acts in the country, for five years. The Home Ministry termed the SIMI as an unlawful association.

Tamil Nadu

PM to launch various projects in Tamil Nadu

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch five National Highways projects worth around three thousand crore rupees in Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu. He will also launch a Road Safety Park and Transport Museum.

Home Minister inaugurates NIA office

  • Union Home Minister inaugurated Rajnath Singh NIA office in Hyderabad. He also inaugurated Guwahati office from Hyderabad. 

BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Indian economy expected to grow at 7.3% in 2019-20

  • Indian economy is expected to grow at 7.3 per cent in calendar years 2019 and 2020, the US-based rating agency Moody’s.

GST collection in February stands at Rs 97,247 cr

  • The GST collection in the month of February stood at 97 thousand 247 crore rupees. However, the collection in previous month was over one lakh crore rupees.

Cabinet approves railway zone at Vishakhapatnam

  • Union Cabinet approved setting up of a Railway Zone at Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and a new division with headquarter at Rayagada in Odisha by reorganizing the existing South Central Railway and East Coast Railway.

Cabinet approves conversion of AIIMS, Delhi into world class Medical University

  • Cabinet has approved the implementation of Master Plan to convert AIIMS, New Delhi into a world class Medical University. The Cabinet also approved setting up of new AIIMS at Manethi, Haryana at a cost of 1299 crore rupees.

Government bans Jamat-e-Islami J&K for 5 years

  • The Centre has banned the Jamat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir for five years under anti-terror law on grounds that it is in close touch with terror outfits and is expected to escalate secessionist movement in the state.

MoU with US on missing, exploited children

  • The Cabinet has approved the Memorandum of Understanding between India and the USA to access tipline reports on Missing and Exploited Children.
  • The MoU has been signed between the National Crime Record Bureau, India and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, NCMEC, USA.
  • The MoU will provide access to more than one lakh tipline reports available with NCMEC, USA and enable law enforcement agencies in India.

Cabinet approves 10% reservation for general category poor in J&K

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Amendment Order, 2019.

Dubai Tennis Championship

  • In Dubai Tennis Championship, Swiss tennis star Roger Federer moved to within two wins of a 100th career title after a tough win against Marton Fucsovics to reach the semi-finals.

International Beach Volleyball Tournament

  • Visakhapatnam hosts its first-ever International Beach Volleyball Tournament. India becomes the 50th country to host an FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. Participating countries include Russia, Poland, South Africa, Austria, Czech Republic, USA and Japan.

Makran Cup

  • National champion Deepak Singh (49 kg) was the lone Indian boxer to notch up a gold while P Lalitha Prasad (52kg), Manish Kaushik (60kg), Duryodhan Singh Negi (69kg), Sanjeet (91kg) and Satish Kumar (91kg) claimed silver medals in the Makran Cup in Chabahar, Iran.
