2018 Theme – “Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe”

  • The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is an effort of the United Nations aimed at strengthening action and spreading awareness about drug abuse and illegal drug trade in the world.

Maharashtra

Committee for floating solar power plant

  • The Maharashtra government has set up a committee to study issues related to the development of a 1,000-MW floating solar power plant at Ujani dam in Solapur district.

Andhra Pradesh

3 field stations to come up to save king cobra

  • The project will be mentored by Romulus Whitaker, known as the founder of the Madras Snake Park. The initiative will be done in association with the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust.

Karnataka

115 stations get free Wi-Fi

  • In an initiative to bridge the digital divide and complement Railways’ mobile applications, 115 railway stations in Karnataka are now equipped with Wi-Fi facilities.

Tamilnadu

Yoga and naturopathy centre coming up at Chengalpattu Medical College

  • An International Yoga and Naturopathy Medical Science Centre will be set up at a cost of Rs.60 crore on the Chengalpattu Government Medical College campus in Kancheepuram district. The project is being touted as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.

‘Special turmeric cell in Nizamabad soon’

  • Special turmeric cell with an officer and four other staff will start functioning soon in the district.

Kerala

New law to save ecologically fragile Munnar

  • The State government is seriously considering enacting a special legislation to take care of all things, including construction activities, in ecologically fragile Munnar.

‘China proposed 2+1 format for India talks’

  • Under the Chinese proposal, China and India can jointly conduct a dialogue with a third regional country in “two plus one” format for dialogue. This is different from a trilateral mechanism.

‘Billion Tree Tsunami’

  • Around the region of Heroshah, previously arid hills are now covered with forest as far as the horizon. In northwestern Pakistan, hundreds of millions of trees have been planted to fight deforestation across the Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Netherlands parliament approves limited ban on burqa, niqab

  • The Netherlands has approved a limited ban on “face-covering clothing” in public places, including Islamic veils and robes such as the burqa and niqab but not the hijab, which covers only the hair.

World’s lightest satellite to space

  • Four Chennai city students build a satellite “Jai Hind 1-S” weighing 33.39 grams, probably the world’s lightest and cheapest.
  • It will travel to the United States next month and find a place, among other scientific material, at the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, NASA.

James Webb Space Telescope to study Jupiter’s Great Red Spot: NASA

  • NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the most ambitious and complex space observatory ever built, will be used to study Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, shedding new light on the enigmatic storm that has been raging on the planet for over 350 years.

Modi urges AIIB to boost lending 10-fold to $40 bn

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to boost lending tenfold to $40 billion by 2020, and to $100 billion by 2025, in order to speed up infrastructure financing across the region.
