December 2 – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

  • The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is a yearly event on December 2, organized by the United Nations General Assembly of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others (resolution 317(IV) of 2 December 1949). The Day was first celebrated in 1986.
  • First country to abolish slavery – 1807, Britain passes Abolition of the Slave Trade Act.
  • Slavery is still legal in country like Mauritania. 

December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities

  • International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the planet.
  • 2018 Theme: Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality

34th Anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy

  • In Madhya Pradesh, a prayer meeting is being organized on the 34th anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
  • One of the World’s worst industrial disasters, over 15,000 people was killed after methyl isocyanate leaked on December 2-3, 1984 from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL).

Dr Rajendra Prasad birth anniversary

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, paid floral tributes to Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, on his birth anniversary at Rashtrapati Bhavan on December 3, 2018.

Three astronauts set to launch to ISS

  • Three space travellers, including two astronauts on their first flight, are scheduled to launch to the International Space Station (ISS) for a six-and-a-half month mission.
  • The three new space travellers – Anne McClain of NASA, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency and Oleg Kononenko of Russian space agency Roscosmos are preparing to launch aboard the Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft in Kazakhstan.

India’s economy grows at 7.1 per cent

  • India’s economy grew at 7.1 per cent for the second quarter of 2018-19 according to data released by Central Statistics Office.

  • The Asia Pacific Summit-2018 began in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.
  • Theme – “Addressing the Critical Challenges of Our Time: Interdependence, Mutual Prosperity, and Universal Values”.

80th Session of Policy Commission

  • Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley addressed the opening session of the 80th Session of Policy Commission of World Customs Organization in Mumbai on December 3, 2018.

World Bank unveils USD 200 bn in climate action investment for 2021-25

  • The World Bank has unveiled 200 billion US Dollars in climate action investment for 2021 to 2025, adding that this amounts to a doubling of its current five-year funding.
  • The move coincides with a UN climate summit in Katowice.

Exercise Cope India 2018

  • Exercise Cope India-18 is the fourth edition in the series of Bilateral Joint exercise held between IAF and USAF, which is conducted in India.
  • The aim of exercise is to provide operational exposure and undertake mutual exchange of best practices towards enhancing operational capability.

Tata Motors Senior National Championship

  • In Wrestling, Vinesh Phogat won the 57-kilogram national title at the Tata Motors Senior National Championship in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Sakshi Malik won in the 62 kilogram.

Tata Open India International Challenge

  • In Badminton, young shuttler Lakshya Sen stormed into the finals of the men’s singles of the 11th Tata Open India International Challenge in Mumbai.

Pune International Marathon

  • Atlawim Debebe of Ethiopia won the Full Marathon with the timing of 2 hours 17 minutes 17 seconds. Teshome Getachew claimed second and Bekele Asefa third position.
  • In women’s Full Marathon Pascalia Chepkogei from Kenya stood first with the timing of 2 hour 50 minutes 27 seconds. Belew Mekonnen and Fekede Tilahun of Ethiopia claimed second and third position.

Hockey World Cup

  • India and Belgium played out a 2-2 draw in their second group match of the Men’s Hockey World Cup at Bhubaneswar.
