60 road junctions in city to become pedestrian-friendly

  • The Chennai Corporation plans to improve pedestrian facilities at 60 road junctions in the city. The civic body has identified consultants to study the junctions and identify the challenges faced by pedestrians. “The work is estimated to cost  100 crore. Non-motorised transport across the junctions will improve,” said an official.

IFS officer crematedwith State honours

  • The body of Conservator of Forests and Director of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve S. Manikandan, 45, who was killed by a wild elephant in the reserve forests in Mysuru, was cremated with full police honours including a 21-gun salute in his home town Cumbum

Governor offers worship at Rameswaram temple, visits Kalam’s house

  • Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who was on a one-day visit to Rameswaram on March 5 , offered worship at Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, visited the ‘House of Kalam’, the residence of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and Arichamuni, the south-eastern tip of Dhanushkodi.

Former Kerala High Court judge D. Sreedevi passed away 

  • Justice (Retd.) D. Sreedevi (79), a former judgof the Kerala High Court and former chairperson of the Kerala State Commission for Women, passed away this morning after a brief illness.

  • Quite a few were shocked when Majiziya Bhanu was announced the winner in the women’s category of the Mr. Kerala competition in Kochi . The 23-year-old posed in a hijab, probably the only woman in the State to do so. And, it was her first time in such a contest.

Forest fires in Kodagu, Turahalli, and Lakkavalli

  • According to the RFO of the area, Varun Kumar, it could have been an accidental fire. “It was ground fire. There is habitation in the surrounding areas. Such fires are common in summer,” he said. The fire was noticed around 5.30 p.m. and was doused within half an hour, according to officials .

State government set on protecting syncretic nature of Bababudan Dargah

  • The State government has opposed the demand to declare the Sri Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swami Dargah near Chikkamagaluru as an exclusively Hindu place of worship, accepting the report submitted by an expert committee headed by Justice Nagamohan Das. With this, the government has confirmed that the cave shrine will retain its syncretic nature as a dargah venerated by both Hindus and Muslims .

CBI to probe ‘leak’ of questions of Staff Selection Commission exam: Rajnath Singh

  • Job aspirants have been protesting outside the Commission’s office in New Delhie since February 27, seeking a CBI probe into the issue.

6,000 staff unpaid: Aircel

  • Salaries for more than 6,000 employees of Aircel have remained unpaid since the beginning of February. The telecom operator does not have funds to pay its employees, or water and electricity bills.
