According to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education rules, all the students from classes 1 to 8 should compulsorily pass to the upper grades. The notification amended the rules and makes a path for no detention policy for class 5 and 8 students and it also states that the format and re-examination will be determined by the state education department.
The states are allowed to decide whether they want to continue the detention policy or not. The Maharashtra state has decided to hold the non-detention policy for now. Many educationalists and school officials are showing interest in non-detention policy and they are stating that without any annual assessment, students cannot improve their education.
