UPSC is not like the engineering entrance examinations with limited syllabus. To crack UPSC Prelims, candidates must be proficient in various topics that range form Indian polity to economy. Not only history but a thorough knowledge of Indian geography is also required.

UPSC CSE Prelims 2022 Topic Wise Weightage

UPSC Prelims exam has two papers – the General Studies I and the CSAT or the aptitude test. Qualifying CSAT and scoring minimum 33 per cent is mandatory. Also, being an aptitude test, it has basic Class 10, 12 level questions on logical reasoning, data interpretation, etc. Scoring more than 110 out of 200 marks in the General Studies I exam is the key to cracking UPSC Prelims.

Over the past few years, there has been a shift in the weightage given to the various topics. The weightage of or the number of questions from Current Affairs continues to enjoy prime position. However, weightage of questions from geography, Indian economy and Indian polity has declined over the years. The steepest rise has been in Environment where the percentage has increased from 11 per cent in 2016 to about 18%. Check the topic wise weightage in the table below.

UPSC IAS Exam Pattern 2022

The UPSC exam pattern for the Preliminary stage consists of two papers, conducted on one day. Both the papers comprise objective type questions with multiple choice of answers. The prelims examination is a qualifying stage to filter candidates for the mains exam.

The marks secured at this stage are not counted towards the final merit list, though candidates have to prepare well for this exam as cut-offs are unpredictable and depend on the average score every year. The details of UPSC prelims pattern is given below:
