Supreme Court Pulls up MCC Over 1450 Vacancies in NEET PG 2021!!! Says It Leads to Lack of Doctors. The Supreme Court granted the Centre and the MCC 24 hours to produce an affidavit outlining the total number of seats that have remained vacant and the reasons why they have not been filled by candidates.

The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) was chastised by the Supreme Court on Wednesday for keeping more than 1,450 seats unfilled in NEET-PG-21, claiming that this will not only cause hardship for applicants but also result in a shortage of doctors. The Supreme Court granted the Centre and the MCC 24 hours to produce an affidavit outlining the total number of seats that have remained vacant and the reasons why they have not been filled by candidates.

It ordered the Centre’s and MCC’s lawyers to file the affidavit during the day and adjourned the case to Thursday. A vacation bench of Justices MR Shah and Aniruddha Bose was hearing a slew of petitions asking for a special stray round of counseling to replace the 1456 seats that remained vacant after the All India Quota stray round.

“Even if there is a single vacant seat, it should not have gone unfilled,” the bench observed during the hearing. The Medical Council is responsible for ensuring that these seats are not left vacant. This is the same issue that arises after each round of counselling.

Why can’t the procedure be made more efficient? When we need doctors, what do we get if we leave the seats empty? This would not only cause difficulties for applicants, but it will also foster corruption.”

Why can’t there be a stress-free education system with everything streamlined, it asked the lawyers for the Centre and the MCC. “Do you have any idea how stressed the pupils and their parents are?” Why have you been putting seats in the middle of the counselling? This court has already made a decision in this regard. The bench stated that “there must be a cut-off date for the amount of seats available and how many admissions will be granted.”

If the students are not admitted, the bench stated that it may issue an order in the matter and award compensation to the candidates who were denied admission. The court then questioned the counsel who is in control of admissions, to which he replied that the Director-General of Health Services is in responsible (DGHS).

The petitions were filed by doctors who took the NEET-PG 2021-22 exam and participated in Rounds 1 and 2 of All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota Counseling, which was followed by All India Mop-Up and State Mop-Up Rounds, and was finally concluded on May 7, 2022, by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) following the All India Stray Vacancy Round.

“On April 18, 2022, via a notification, MCC declared that there existed 323 vacant seats in UG Counselling and that in order to ensure that these precious seats do not go to waste, they would be conducting a Special Stray Round for the same,” according to one of the petitions filed by DrAsthaGoel and others through advocate TanviDubey.

The petition stated that it is important to note that MCC has historically conducted Special Stray Rounds for UG and PG students to ensure that seats do not become vacant, but that this was not done this year.
