Tamil Nadu Schools Reopening Soon? – School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh. A full curfew has been imposed in Tamil Nadu for the first two weeks of May 10 due to the second wave of corona.
It has been over a year since primary school students in Tamil Nadu attended school. Schools in the State were shut in March 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. While educators hoped for schools to reopen sometime early this year, the State has now been gripped by a second wave and schools are expected to remain shut for longer.
For private schools that have been able to go the online way, initiating online classes or virtual assessments came with its own set of challenges.
Minister of School Education: The new academic year is set to begin in June. On the other hand, the government has not taken any decision regarding the reopening of schools and the 12th class general examination due to the increasing incidence of corona. Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyamozhi was questioned in this regard. He said the decision on the reopening of schools in Tamil Nadu would be taken only after the spread of corona was fully controlled.
“It isn’t feasible or practical to expect young children to take up 50 or 60-mark exams after attending online classes. We had to rework our approach and found that oral assessments and project-based learning worked best with young children,” said Priyanka Ghosh, Principal, Vikas Mantra Public School.
***Complaints have been received about private schools charging fees. Appropriate action will be taken on it. Also, 12th grade students do not have the opportunity to declare the last academic year as zero year.
The schools will remain closed for the time being and the date of reopening has not been communicated by the government yet.
