NEET PG Counselling 2021 Deferred by Next 4 Weeks: SC Ordered MCC to revisit 8 Lakh Criteria on EWS Quota: National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) PG counselling has been deferred for another 4 weeks by Supreme Court. SC ordered Centre to revisit the criteria for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) Quota. Solicitor General informed that NEET PG counselling will not be conducted until centre submits valid EWS quota criteria.

During the hearing Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that, “In the matter I have instruction to say that the government has decided to revisit the criteria. We will formulate a committee and take fresh decision within 4 weeks. Till then the counselling shall remain stayed online, I give my assurance.” Next hearing has been scheduled on 06.01.2022.

The Court questioned the centre that “How persons income from a same town or village equated with same income person living in metro city”. The decision to review comes after the apex court questioned the centre on the 8 lakh annual income criteria, which is also similar to the creamy layer of the OBCs. SC requested that Government should take step as per the Constitutional Amendment providing for economic reservation.

SC said the reservation in not uniform all over the country under in EWS quota. This would bring a serious problem to students. Centre has agreed to review its criteria for the EWS and OBC reservations. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had submitted that the rationale was fixed on the basis of Article 14, 15 and 16 of the Constitution.
