Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the first education minister in independent India. Duration of his service period is from august 15, 1947 to February 2, 1958. The ministry of Human Resource Development decided to commemorate his birth day as a National education day in India to honour his service. In India this day is announced as a holiday.
