Construction of bunkers along the IB/LoC to protect border residents in J&K

  • The Home Minister called for expediting construction of bunkers along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) to protect the border residents.
  • The MHA has approved Rs.415 crores for construction of more than 14,000 bunkers in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch districts.

‘Gaj Yatra’

  • ’Gaj Yatra’, a “journey celebrating India’s national heritage animal”, aims at securing 100 elephant corridors across India.
  • Four of these are in Meghalaya, including the Siju-Rewak corridor that some 1,000 elephants use to travel between the Balpakram and Nokrek National Parks in the State.

  • For the first time in West Bengal, the Election Commission (EC) will use Braille-enabled signboards carrying instructions for visually challenged voters.

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur launched the week-long ‘Polythene Hatao Paryavaran Bachao’ campaign started by Environment, Science and Technology Department in Shimla.

  • Charmaghz, the library-on-wheels offers pupils and street kids free access to children’s books, which are in short supply at public schools and libraries.

New Zealand to cull 1,26,000 cows to end disease outbreak

  • New Zealand, the world’s biggest dairy exporter, will spend more than NZ$880 million ($610 million) in a bid to eradicate the mycoplasma bovis cattle disease.
  • Mycoplasma bovis can lead to conditions such as udder infection, pneumonia and arthritis in affected cattle, but does not pose a food safety risk or any risk to humans.

MOU to develop prototypes for self-piloted vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft

  • IIT-Kanpur to develop vertical take-off and landing aircraft prototypes
  • The VTOL technology equips the aircraft to perform manoeuvres that are impossible with traditional aircraft, and also comes across as a big advantage for air combat and rescue.

Tata Trusts signs MoU with govt to provide development support in Naxal-hit districts

  • The Tata Trusts has joined hands with the government to help it in development initiatives in eight worst Naxal-affected districts in Chhattisgarh, which were covered under the “transformation of aspirational” districts programme.

BCCI goes ‘green’ by joining hands with United Nations

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and UN Environment signed an agreement to promote ‘green’ cricket in India.
  • The partnership will also focus on phasing out single-use plastic across stadiums in the country.

  • A Joint Indo-Bangladesh Army Trekking Expedition to Nanda Devi East Base Camp (4300m) was flagged off by Director General of Military Training on 28 May 18 at New Delhi.
  • It consists of 16-member team of Indian Army and 10-member team from Bangladesh Army.

  • Shane Watson struck an unbeaten 117 off 57 balls as Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the Indian Premier League final.
