Madras Day Is Observing Today – 384th Anniversary of Greater City: Every year on August 22, Madras Day will be celebrated to commemorate the importance, heritage, significance, and cultural diversity of the greater city and also to celebrate the foundation of Madras City in Tamil Nadu in 1639. This year the city has been celebrating the 384th anniversary of the foundation.

The day was started to observe in 2004 and this year is the 20th celebration of Madras Day. The effort to celebrate this day was forwarded by journalists Shashi Nair and Vincent D’Souza and historian S. Muthiah in 2004. Many events have been organized across the city and companies across Chennai have also celebrating this day with sweets.
History also states that then the viceroy of the Vijayanagar empire Damarla Venkatadri Nataka sold the settlement of Madraspatnam or Chennapatnam to East India Company representatives Andrew Cogan and Francis Day. The NGOs also organized a heritage walk to convey the heritage of the city with its past, present, and future.
