India and France discussed ways to increase the mobility of students, professionals, and skilled workers while bolstering their efforts to combat irregular migration between the two countries, according to a statement released after Prime Minister NarendraModi met with French President Emmanuel Macron here on Wednesday.

“Recognizing the benefits of bilateral student mobility, France maintains its goal of 20,000 Indian students by 2025,” according to the statement. “This will provide potential for new firms, start-ups, and innovation between the two nations.”

In 2019, 10,000 Indian students chose to pursue higher studies in France. In 2020 and 2021, France welcomed Indian students and provided special assistance to help them through the COVID situation, according to latest figures from the website of the French Embassy in New Delhi.

The two countries are completely committed to implementing the Partnership Agreement on Migration and Mobility, which took effect on October 1, 2021, according to the statement.

The pact intends to make temporary circular migration easier by promoting mobility and encouraging people to return home with their skills. Prime Minister Modi met with French President Macron in Paris for the final leg of his three-nation tour to discuss bilateral and mutual interests, as well as regional and global events.

Prime Minister Modi returned home early on Thursday after wrapping up a European tour that included bilateral discussions in Germany and Denmark to strengthen partnerships in areas such as trade, energy, and green technology.
