Indian Government Proposal: To Name All 23 AIIMS After Freedom Fighters, Historical Mounments. The government has decided to give each of the 23 AIIMS, including the one in Delhi, a unique name based on local heroes, independence fighters, significant historical occurrences or local landmarks, or their unique geographic identities.
The Union Health Ministry has produced a proposal to assign particular names to all AIIMS, which are completely functional, partially functional, and under construction, and a plan to name India’s premier medical institutes after local heroes is reportedly under discussion.
In the categories of local heroes, independence fighters, unsung heroes, and historical monuments, each of the new AIIMS has proposed three to four names. A justification for the suggested names has also been requested by the Union Health Ministry and Family.
While the majority of AIIMS are currently in operating, others are being built as part of the PradhanMantriSwasthyaYojana (PMSSY) and are referred to simply as AIIMS. The only thing that separates them is where they are.
AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Raipur, AIIMS Rishikesh, AIIMS Nagpur, AIIMS Raebareli, and AIIMS Madurai have all received suggestions for names.
Notably, Phase 1 of PMSSY approved and completely operationalized six new AIIMS in Bihar (Patna), Chhattisgarh (Raipur), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), Odisha (Bhubaneswar), Rajasthan (Jodhpur), and Uttarakhand (Rishikesh).
Out of the 16 AIIMS that were created between 2015 and 2022, 10 colleges have begun offering MBBS courses and outpatient department services. While only MBBS classes have been started in another two, the remaining four institutes are at different stages of development.
