8 US made Apache AH-64E attack helicopters to be inducted into IAF today

  • Eight United States-made Apache AH-64E attack helicopters will be inducted into the Indian Air Force today. The addition of the Apache fleet will significantly enhance the IAF’s combat capabilities.
  • The IAF had signed a multi-billion dollar contract with the US Government and Boeing Ltd in September 2015 for purchase of 22 Apache helicopters.

Exercise Yudh Abhyas – 2019

  • As part of the ongoing Indo-US defence cooperation, a joint military training, Exercise Yudh Abhyas – 2019 is being conducted at Joint Base Lewis Mc Chord, Washington, USA from 05-18 September 2019. Exercise Yudh Abhyas is one of the largest joint running military training and defence corporation endeavors between India and USA. This will be the 15th edition of the joint exercise hosted alternately between the two countries.

The annual Defence Ministerial Meeting on 2 September 2019 in Tokyo

  • E. Mr. Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister of India is on a bilateral visit to Japan at the invitation of the H.E. Mr. Takeshi Iwaya, Defence Minister of Japan from 2 to 3 September 2019. The two Ministers held the annual Defence Ministerial Meeting on 2 September 2019 in Tokyo.

Exercise TSENTR 2019

  • Exercise TSENTR 2019 is part of the annual series of large scale exercises that form part of the Russian Armed Forces’ annual training cycle. This year’s Exercise TSENTR 2019 will be conducted by Central Military Commission of Russia. Apart from host Russia, military contingents from China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan will also take part in this mega event.

Indo-Lanka maritime fleet exercise – SLINEX 2019 to be held from tomorrow

  • Sri Lankan Navy is sending Sindurala and Suranimala two ships to India to participate in the SLINEX 2019, the joint maritime naval exercise with the Indian Navy. The annual Joint Indo-Lanka maritime fleet exercise – SLINEX 2019 is scheduled to be held from tomorrow. The week-long exercise will be attended by 323 Sri Lankan navy personnel including the commanding flag officer of the naval fleet.

White Water Rafting Expedition – ‘Rudrashila’ Flagged off at Jaisalmer

  • The white water Rafting Expedition christened ‘RUDRASHILA’ being undertaken by Kalidhar Battalion under the aegis of Battle Axe Division was Flagged Off on 11 September 2019.
  • The expedition christened ‘Rudrashila’ has been organised to commemorate the 75th Raising day of the Kalidhar Battalion. ‘Rudrashila’ takes its name from the famed Rudraprayag tributary of the Ganges River in the Mountains of Uttarakhand. ‘Kalidhar Battalion’ was raised on 01 November 1943 and has participated in all major operations of the Indian Army including two overseas assignments in Korea in 1953 and UN peacekeeping Mission in Congo in 2005-06.

Indo-Thailand Joint Military Exercise Maître – 2019

  • Joint Military Exercise MAITREE-2019 between India and Thailand will be conducted at Foreign Training Node, Umroi (Meghalaya) from 16-29 Sep 2019. Indian and Royal Thailand Army (RTA) comprising 50 soldiers each will participate in the exercise with an aim to share experience gained during various counter terrorism operations in their respective countries.
  • Exercise MAITREE is an annual training event which is being conducted alternatively in Thailand and India since 2006.

DRDO successfully flight-tests Man Portable Antitank Guided Missile

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested indigenously developed low weight, fire and forget Man Portable Antitank Guided Missile (MPATGM) in the ranges of Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The missile was launched from a man portable Tripod launcher and the target was mimicking a functional tank.

Army’s mountain strike Corps to conduct exercise in Arunachal

  • The Army is scheduled to conduct a major Exercise ‘Him Vijay’ beginning October in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam with its newly created Integrated Battle Groups (IBG) involving 15,000 troops.
  • The exercise will coincide with the proposed visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping for the second informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

IAF resurrects 17 Squadron ‘Golden Arrows’ for Rafale

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) 8rresurrected the Air Force Station Ambala-based 17 Squadron ‘Golden Arrows’, which will operate the first squadron of Rafale fighter jets in the near future. The squadron was formed at Ambala on 01st Oct 1951 under the command of Flight Lieutenant D L Springett and was then equipped with Harvard-II B aircraft.

Wargaming software handed over to Indian Navy

  • Institute for Systems Studies and Analysis (ISSA) Delhi, a premier DRDO laboratory, has designed and developed a new generation Wargaming Software in collaboration with Maritime Warfare Centre, Visakhapatnam to meet the contemporary operational and tactical level wargaming requirement for the Indian Navy.
  • The key focus has been to create a wargaming environment which enables Maritime Warfare Centres (MWCs) to train using the latest technological and computing tools.

Maiden IN-RSN-RTN Trilateral Exercise

  • A maiden trilateral exercise, involving Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), Royal Thailand Navy (RTN) and Indian Navy (IN) has commenced at Port Blair on 16 Sep 19.
  • The five-day-long exercise is aimed at bolstering the maritime inter-relationships amongst Singapore Thailand and India, and contributes significantly to enhancing the overall maritime security in the region.
  • This would also strengthen the mutual confidence amongst three navies in terms of interoperability and development of a common understanding of procedures.

Air-to-Air missile Astra successfully flight tested from Su-30 MKI

  • Air-to-Air missile, ASTRA, has been successfully flight tested on 16 September 2019 off the coast of Odisha.
  • The missile was launched from Su-30 MKI as a part of User trials. The live aerial target was engaged accurately demonstrating the capability of first indigenous air-to-air missile.

First woman officer to be posted as a military diplomat at an Indian mission abroad

  • Anjali Singh becomes the country’s first woman officer to be posted as a military diplomat at an Indian mission abroad. This woman Navy officer will take over as the Deputy Naval Attache at Moscow in Russia

Second Scorpene submarine“KHANDERI”

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) called ‘Ship Builder to the Nation’ delivered the second Scorpene submarine ‘KHANDERI’ to the Indian Navy at an event held in Mumbai.
  • The submarine ‘KHANDERI’ is named after the wide snouted Saw fish, a deadly sea predator of the great Indian Ocean. The first Submarine Khanderi was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 06thDecember 1968 and decommissioned on 18th October 1989 after more than 20 years of yeoman service to the nation

Shri Rajnath Singh becomes first Defence Minister to fly ‘LCA Tejas’

  • Shri Rajnath Singh has scripted history by becoming the first Defence Minister to fly the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ‘Tejas’.
  • He congratulated HAL, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) for building the multi-role fighter aircraft.

NDRF set to induct women personnel

  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is all set to induct women personnel in its new battalions within the next one year. The Union Government had, in 2018, made a proposal to attach women contingents to NDRF battalions in the country.

Kargil to Kohima (K2K) Ultra Marathon – “Glory Run”

  • Kargil to Kohima (K2K) Ultra-Marathon- “Glory Run” was flagged off from Kargil War Memorial, Drass by Air Vice Marshal PM Sinha AVSM VSM, Air Officer Commanding J&K.
  • To commemorate 20th year of Kargil Victory and to live up to the true tradition and motto of IAF i.e. “Touch the Sky with Glory”, a unique expedition Kargil to Kohima (K2K) Ultra-Marathon- “Glory Run” is being undertaken by IAF from Kargil War Memorial, Drass (J&K) to Kohima War Cemetery, Kohima (Nagaland).

Exercise MALABAR 2019

  • The 23rd edition of the Trilateral Maritime Exercise MALABAR, is scheduled between the navies of India, Japan and USA from 26 Sep to 04 Oct 19 off the coast of Japan. Two frontline indigenously designed and built Indian Naval Ships, the Multipurpose Guided Missile Frigate Sahyadriand ASW Corvette Kiltan, with Rear Admiral Suraj Berry, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet embarked onboard, arrived at Sasebo today, to participate in the Exercise.

Joint Military Exercise KAZIND – 2019

  • Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2019 between India and Kazakhstan will be conducted at Pithoragarh from 02 to 15 October 2019. The exercise will comprise of nearly 100 soldiers from both Indian and Kazakhstan Army who would be sharing their experience gained during conduct of various counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations in the past.
  • Exercise KAZIND-2019 is the fourth edition of an annual event which is conducted alternatively in Kazakhstan and India. The aim of this exercise is to conduct company level joint training with emphasis on counter terrorism operations in mountainous terrain. During the exercise, aspects of emerging trends of global terrorism and hybrid warfare have also been included.

Navy’s first new stealth frigate, INS ‘Nilgiri’

  • INS ‘Nilgiri’, the first of the Navy’s seven new stealth frigates was launched at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai.
  • INS Nilgiri is the first ship of Project17A. Project 17A frigates is a design derivative of the Shivalik class stealth frigates with much more advanced stealth features and indigenous weapons and sensors. These frigates are being built using integrated construction methodology. The P17A frigates incorporate new design concepts for improved survivability, sea keeping, stealth and ship manoeuvrability.
