Predicted on Friday that the Indian economy will expand by 7.4% this fiscal year and maintain that pace in fiscal year 2019 as well. Speaking at the FE Best Banks Awards event in this city, Sitharaman said, “Estimates have also showed based on the trends, that we are absolutely at that range… 7.4 (per cent) and that level will remain even next year.”
According to her, the current state of the world is challenging and prudence should still be exercised. As global growth slows, the export sector will have challenges, and the government will assist those organisations dealing with these challenges, she said.
In the meanwhile, she emphasised the need for a thorough discussion on giveaways and stated that political parties making pre-election promises should make budgetary plans for handling the costs and not shift the burden to other groups. Despite having no part in the announcements, Sitharaman claimed that power discoms and generating businesses have been observed to bear the brunt of such giveaways as they receive partial or, in some cases, no payment at all. She cited estimates for the growth rate made by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and others. According to her, the Reserve Bank of India and the International Monetary Fund has both predicted that India will have the fastest growth over the next two fiscal years.
