Solar power plant at BEL in Chennai
- Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated a 16 MW grid-connected solar power plant set up by Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) at Heavy Vehicle Factory (HVF) in Avadi.
Tamil Nadu to ban disposable plastic from next year
- The State government on Tuesday announced a ban on manufacture, sales, storage and usage of disposable plastic across State with effective from January 1, 2019.
Tamil Nadu exempts textile job working/service units from e-way bill
- The Tamil Nadu government has exempted job working and service units related to yarn, fabrics and garments from generation of e-way bill.
- No e-way bill is required for the transport of consignment with value of goods not exceeding Rs 1 lakh.

Chitrangudi, Karaivetti maybe declared eco-sensitive
- In a bid to conserve wildlife habitats in the State, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has proposed to declare areas around the Chitrangudi Bird Sanctuary in Ramanathapuram district and Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary in Ariyalur district as Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ).
TamilNadu’s own ‘seeraga samba’ in line for Geographical Indication tag
- The tiny, but immensely popular and pricey, seeraga samba may well become the first rice variety from Tamil Nadu to get the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The rice variety is named after seeragam, the Tamil name for cumin seeds, since the rice is as fine as the condiment.
NLCIL’s Three 100 MW Solar Power Projects
- The Union Minister for Railways, Coal, Finance & Company Affairs, Shri Piyush Goyal inaugurated Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL)’s three 100 MW Solar Power Projects for commercial operation and dedicated these projects to the Nation .
- The Solar Power projects situated at Thoppalaakkarai and Sethupuram in Virudhunagar District and Sellaiya Sezhiyanallur in Tirunelveli District, with an installed capacity of 100 MW each.
NPTEL ties up with IBM
- The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) along with IBM, the multinational technology firm, will offer a 12-week online course on blockchain architecture, design and uses.
Vertical gardens to come up in congested Chennai neighbourhoods
- The Chennai Corporation is set to develop vertical gardens in congested neighbourhoods, utilising existing civic infrastructure for increasing greenery.
- The Bridges department of the civic body will develop the first vertical garden around piers of the bridge on G.N. Chetty Road in T.Nagar.
Yoga and naturopathy centre coming up at Chengalpattu Medical College
- An International Yoga and Naturopathy Medical Science Centre will be set up at a cost of Rs.60 crore on the Chengalpattu Government Medical College campus in Kancheepuram district. The project is being touted as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.
T.N. to soon launch networked CT, MRI machines in govt. hospitals
- Tamil Nadu will become the first State in the country to virtually connect 58 computed tomography (CT) and 18 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines located in different government hospitals in the State.
State’s maternal mortality rate drops to 62
- According to Health Management Information System data, the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of the Tamil Nadu state is 62.
