World Teacher’s Day

  • Teachers’ Day was celebrated in India in 1962
  • This is the year when  Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan began serving as the second president of India. To celebrate his esteemed position, his students suggested that his birthday be celebrated as ‘Radhakrishnan Day’.
  • On this day, teachers and students report to school as usual but the usual activities and classes are replaced by activities of celebration, thanks and remembrance.
  • A teacher is a friend, philosopher, and guide who holds our hand, opens our mind, and touches our heart. The contribution of a teacher cannot be ignored at all. In many countries across the world, Teacher’s day is a special day where teachers of schools, colleges, and universities are honoured specially.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan Birthday

Birth : 

He was born on 05 September 1888 in a town called Tirutani in Andhra Pradesh.

  • Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher and statesman who was the first Vice President of India and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.
  • Radhakrishnan was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1984 and the British Order of Merit in 1963. He passed away on April 17, 1975 and has till date been nominated eleven times for the Nobel Peace prize.
  • Teachers’ Day is celebrated to honour the memory of India’s first Vice President and to commemorate the importance of teachers in our lives. Since 1962, his birthday is being celebrated in India as Teacher’s Day on 5 September.
  • During the Teachers’ Day, teachers are awarded with a state award and national award.Since 1997, the Government of Tamil Nadu has been awarded the Honorary Award for Dr. Radhakrishnan Award.

Mother Teresa Memorial Day

 

  • Mother Teresa was born to ethnic Albanian parents on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, now the capital of Macedonia, and named Gonxha Agnes Bojaxhiu.
  • Deeply religious, she became a nun at the age of 16, joining the Loreto abbey in Ireland. Two years later she was given the name Sister Teresa.
  • In 1979 Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work for the world’s destitute. “I am unworthy” she said.
  • In March 1997 Sister Nirmala, a former Hindu who converted to Roman Catholicism, succeeded Mother Teresa as leader of the Missionaries of Charity.
  • On September 5, 1997, Mother Teresa died of a heart attack at her order’s headquarters in Kolkata. An array of world dignitaries attended her funeral.
