Important Events Of January 7

Birth Anniversary Of Sadako Sasaki

  • Sadako Sasaki (January 7, 1943 – October 25, 1955) was a Japanese girl who was two years old when an American atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, near her home next to the Misasa Bridge.

  • Sasaki became one of the most widely known hibakusha – a Japanese term meaning “bomb-affected person”.
  • She is remembered through the story of the one thousand origami cranes she folded before her death, and is to this day a symbol of the innocent victims of nuclear warfare.

Discover The Galileo’s Jupitor Satellite

  • Probably the most significent contribution that Galileo Galilei made to science was the discovery of the four satellites around Jupiter that are now named in his honor.
  • Galileo first observed the moons of Jupiter on January 7, 1610 through a homemade telescope.
  • He originally thought he saw three stars near Jupiter, strung out in a line through the planet.

In 1610, Galileo Galilei turned his rudimentary telescope on Jupiter, and realized that it had 4 large moons orbiting it. Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. This was an important discovery, because it demonstrated that Earth was not the center of the Universe as proponents of the geocentric view believed.

Galileo was the first astronomer to detail extensive observations about the planet. He was also the first astronomer to discover the four largest moons that orbit the planet.

January 7 is the seventh day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 358 days remaining until the end of the year (359 in leap years).
