Important Events of January – 30

Martyrs’ Day

  • In India, there are several days declared as Martyrs’ Day (at national level also known as Sarvodaya day). They are named in honour of those who are recognized as martyrs for the nation.

Gandhi

  • 30 January is the date observed at the national level. The date was chosen as it marks the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948, by Nathuram GodseOn Martyr’s Day the president, the vice president, the prime minister, the defence minister, and the three Service Chiefs gather at the samadhi at Raj Ghat memorial and lay wreaths decorated with multi-colour flowers. The armed forces personnel blow bugles sounding the Last Post.
  • The inter-services contingent reverse arms as a mark of respect. A two-minute silence in memory of Indian martyrs is observed throughout the country at 11 AM. Participants hold all-religion prayers and sing tributes.

JAMES WATT BIRTHDAY

BIRTH : He was born on January 30, 1736.

James Watt

  • James Watt was a Scottish inventor, mechanical engineer, and chemist who improved on Thomas Newcomen’s 1712 Newcomen steam engine with his Watt steam engine in 1781, which was fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world.
  • Watt attempted to commercialise his invention, but experienced great financial difficulties until he entered a partnership with Matthew Boulton in 1775. The new firm of Boulton and Watt was eventually highly successful and Watt became a wealthy man. In his retirement, Watt continued to develop new inventions though none was as significant as his steam engine work.
  • He developed the concept of horsepower, and the SI unit of power, the watt, was named after him.
 DEATH: He Died on August 25, 1819 at the age of 83.
