National Bicarbonate of Soda Day

  • The National Bicarbonate of Soda Day, also referred to as the National Baking Soda Day, is an unofficial food holiday celebrated on December 30.
  • Sodium bicarbonate is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3.
  • A component of the mineral natron, it is a white, odorless, water-soluble crystalline solid that is found dissolved in many mineral springs.
  • Baking soda is a white, odorless, crystalline solid that is completely soluble in water. It is very useful around the home, the kitchen, and for medical purposes.
  • One should know the difference between baking soda and baking powder. Baking powder is a mix of bicarbonate of soda, acidic component, and cornstarch.
  • It releases carbon dioxide when mixed with the liquid or when placed in the heated oven. Baking powder is easier to use than baking soda as baking soda is about four times stronger.

  • Rizal Day is a Philippine national holiday commemorating the life and works of Jose Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines.
  • It is celebrated every December 30, the anniversary of Rizal’s 1896 execution at Bagumbayan (present-day Rizal Park) in Manila.
  • He was convicted on the grounds of rebellion, sedition and conspiring against the government, and was sentenced to execution by a firing squad on 30 December ,1896.
  • His death was the last straw for the Filipinos and thus began the end for the Spanish colonisers.
  • 1898 Spanish rule over the country was finished. In 1898, President Emilio Aguinaldo declared December 30th as a national day of mourning for José Rizal and all other victims of Spanish rule. Rizal Day is celebrated to this day.
