National Consumers Right Day

  • National Consumers Right Day is observed across India on 24th December of every year.
  • The date was chosen, because on this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was enacted on this day in 1986.
  • The day provides an unique opportunity to highlight the importance of the consumer movement and the need to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities.
  • The Consumer Protection and Action Committee (CPAC) celebrated the day by distributing complaints forms, information brochures and other consumer rights literature freely to the public.
  • Consumer Protection Act, 1986 ensures speedy and inexpensive settlements of consumer’s disputes.
  • The eight rights recognized under Consumer Protection Act, 1986 includes six rights of the consumers provided in the UN charter.
  • The rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 flow from the rights enshrined in Articles 14 to 19 of the Constitution of India.
  • The act applies to all goods and services unless specifically exempted, which covers the private, public and cooperative sectors. It also provides speedy and inexpensive adjudication.
  • The Act envisages the promotion and protection of rights of consumers such as Right to Safety, Right to be informed, Right to Choose and Right to be heard.

M.G. Ramachandran Memorial Day

Birth: 17 January 1917

  • Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran (17 January 1917 – 24 December 1987), popularly known as M. G. R., was an Indian actor, filmmaker and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for ten years between 1977 and 1987.
  • He is a cultural icon in the state and is regarded as one of the most influential actors of the Tamil film industry.
  • He was popularly known as “Makkal Thilagam” (People’s King) as he was popular with the masses. He was a philanthropist and a humanitarian icon
  • In his youth, Ramachandran and his elder brother M. G. Chakrapani became members of a drama troupe to support their family.
  • Influenced by Gandhian ideals, MGR joined the Indian National Congress.
  • He became a member of the C. N. Annadurai-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK party) and rapidly rose through its ranks, using his enormous popularity as a film star to build a large political base.
  • In 1972, three years after Annadurai’s death, he left the DMK, then led by Karunanidhi, MGR’s once friend and now rival, to form his own party—the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
  • Five years later, he steered an AIADMK-led alliance to victory in the 1977 election, routing the DMK in the process. He became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the first film actor to become a chief minister in India.
  • Except for a six-month interregnum in 1980, when his government was overthrown by the Union government, he remained as chief minister till his death in 1987, leading the AIADMK to two more electoral triumphs in 1980 and 1984.

Periyar E. V. Ramasamy Memorial Day

Birth: 17 September 1879

  • Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy  (17 September 1879 – 24 December 1973), commonly known as Periyar, also referred to as Thanthai Periyar, was an Indian social activist, and politician who started the Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam.He is known as the ‘Father of modern Tamilnadu‘. He has done exemplary works against Brahminical dominance, caste prevalence and women oppression in Tamilnadu.
  • E.V. Ramasamy joined the Indian National Congress in 1919, but resigned in 1925 when he felt that the party was only serving the interests of Brahmins.
  • He questioned the subjugation of non-Brahmin Dravidians as Brahmins enjoyed gifts and donations from non-Brahmins but opposed and discriminated non-Brahmins in cultural and religious matters.
  • In 1924, E.V. Ramasamy participated in a non-violent agitation (satyagraha) in Vaikom, Kerala. From 1929 to 1932 Ramasamy made a tour of British Malaya, Europe, and Russia which influenced him.
  • In 1939, E.V. Ramasamy became the head of the Justice Party, and in 1944, he changed its name to Dravidar Kazhagam.
