Charan Singh Birth Anniversary 

Birth:

  • Saran Singh was born on December 23, 1902 in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh.

  • Charan Singh entered politics as part of the Independence Movement motivated by Mohandas Gandhi.
  • He was one of “three principal leaders in Congress state politics.
  • He became visible on the national stage from 1959 when he publicly opposed the unquestioned leader and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s socialistic and collectivist land policies in the Nagpur Congress Session.
  • Charan Singh’s political career suffered due to his open criticism of Nehru’s economic policy.
  • In July 1979, he became the country’s 5th Prime Minister amongst many political crises.
  • Charan Singh has also achieved the record of India’s only Prime Minister who has never visited the Lok Sabha during his short term.
  • He also wrote books on various subjects including Zamindari system of destruction, ‘cooperative farming system’, ‘poverty alleviation and settlement in India’ and ‘land for laborers’. Jamandari system eradication, cooperative farming system, poverty alleviation and settlement in India, He has written books on many topics including land for the workers.

Indian freedom fighter Kakkan Memorial Day

Birth:

Kakkan was born on 18 June 1907 in Madurai District of Tamil Nadu.

  • Kakkan was drawn to the independence movement from an early stage in his life. While in school, he joined the Indian National Congress.
  • He was sworn in as the Minister for Public Works (excluding Electricity), Harijan Welfare, Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes on 13 April 1957.
  • Some of Kakkan’s achievements as Minister have been the construction of the Mettur and Vaigai reservoirs and the formation of the Harijan Seva Sangh for the upliftment and welfare of Scheduled Castes.
  • As Minister of Agriculture, he established two Agriculture Universities in Madras state.
  •  In 1999, the Government of India released a postage stamp commemorating Kakkan and his contributions to the nation.
