National Handloom Day

  • On the 7th of August every year is celebrated as the National Handloom Day to honor the handloom weavers across the country.
  • National Handloom Day is being observed since 2015.
  • During the Indian freedom struggle as a boycott of foreign cloth ‘ swadeshi ‘ in the year 1907 was started on August 7.
  • To commemorate its handloom industry awareness on the importance of the public, this day is celebrated on handlooms.
  • The use of handloom products in India as part of the tradition and culture of India adds to the livelihood of the weavers.
  • More than 43 lakh people are engaged in handloom industry in our country.

M. S. Swaminathan Birth Day

Birth:

  • He was born on 7 August 1925 in Kumbakonam at Tamil Nadu.

Honours:

  • He is an Indian geneticist and international administrator, renowned for his leading role in India’s Green Revolution, a program under which high-yield varieties of wheat and rice seedlings were planted in the fields of poor farmers.
  • Swaminathan is known as the “Father of Indian Green Revolution”.
  • From 1972 to 1979 he was director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
  • He was Principal Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture from 1979 to 1980. He served as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (1982–88) and became president of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 1988.
  • In 1999 Time magazine placed him in the ‘Time 20’ list of most influential Asian people of the 20th century.

Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Day

Birth:

  • He was born on May 7, 1861.

Honours:

  • He was  Famous Bengali poet, philosopher, composer, writer, and educator.
  • Ravindranath Tagore, who founded the University of Visvarabari, was popularly known as ‘Gurudev‘.
  • His famous songs were called ‘Ravindra Sankeet’.
  • The two songs in the Ravindra Sangeet Naty written by him are Jana Gana Mana and Amar Sonaar, the National anthem of India and Bangladesh.
  • In 1877 his first short story and drama came out.

Awards:

  • In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in his poetry ‘Gitanjali’, the first Nobel laureate in Asia.
  • He was awarded the title ‘Veerathirumagan’ by the King George.George was King of England.

Death:

  • He died on August 7, 1941.

  • He was born on July 22 ,1915 in villiyanur.
